"Ahh!" Minnowtail woke up with a screech. She had been dreaming, and Breezepelt had been looming over her, his fangs bared to kill...
She shuddered and looked around the den. Where am I? It looked like the medicine cat den-it was the medicine cat den! She vaguely remembered being supported here, but what happened next, she didn't know.
"Whoa, calm down. My stocks of thyme are low enough already." It was Mothwing. The young medicine she-cat hurried towards her, her amber eyes glowing in the dark. It must be nighttime, Minnowtail realised with a jolt.
Lying down as heat pulsed through her body once more, she croaked weakly, "How long have I been out?" Mothwing's triangular face was grim. "Three days. Dawnflower, Pebblefoot and even the kits have been worried sick about you. I had to literally push Mossykit and Hollowkit away from you far too many times. Besides, you have an infection in your hind leg, and your other wounds aren't quite better yet."
"Where are they now?" Minnowtail winced at the sharp sting of herbs as Mothwing began to apply fresh ones. "Sleeping. Dawnflower stayed up all night, but only today Pebblefoot managed to convince her to rest." Seeing the dappled golden she-cat's eyes that were drooping, Minnowtail remarked, "You also look like you need rest."
She straightened and replied curtly, "No, Minnowtail. Can't you see that your life is more important right now?" Struggling to sit up, the surroundings began to swim in front of her eyes and Mothwing pushed her back down. "You're not strong enough yet."
"How about Willowshine?" she asked when her environs became focused again. "Gathering horsetail, dock and cobwebs. I used quite a lot for your wounds," came the tart answer.
Minnowtail let out a soft sigh and settled back into the comfortable moss.
"Wake up, Minnowtail!" The harsh yowl of a tom brought her back to her senses. Blinking hazily, Minnowtail saw the scrawny figure of Shredtail glaring at her balefully. "You missed a lot of training."
Grimacing at the sting of hr injuries that seemed worse in the musty air of the Dark Forest, Minnowtail glared right back. "Can't you see that I have an infected wound? I need to rest if I'm to live!"
Shredtail let out a snort. "You only got that because you were too slow. Toughen up!" But still, he flicked his striped dark brown tail and she woke up back at the RiverClan camp with a groan.
This time, it was sunhigh already. Willowshine was by her side, her sleek pale gray tabby tail wrapped around her paws and looking solemn. She looked up as Minnowtail stirred, a hint of surprise in her leaf-green eyes.
"I didn't think you'd ever wake up."
