The soft hum of music filled the kitchen, blending with the occasional clink of bowls and utensils. The delicious aroma of chocolate lingered in the air, but the best part was the sight in front of you—Felix, covered in a light dusting of flour, his lips curved into the brightest smile as he mixed the batter for brownies.
"Are you sure I'm not messing this up?" Felix asked, glancing over at you with those deep brown eyes full of focus, his brows furrowing ever so slightly. He'd been working on perfecting this brownie recipe all day, and even though the first batch came out great, he wanted to make them even better.
"You're doing amazing, Lix," you reassured him, sitting at the counter, watching as he carefully stirred the thick, chocolatey mixture in the bowl. "Besides, you've made these a hundred times. You've got this."
Felix let out a soft laugh, brushing some flour off his cheek with the back of his hand, only to accidentally smear more across his face. "I just want them to be perfect. You deserve the best brownies ever."
You couldn't help but smile at how earnest he was. Felix was always so thoughtful, always trying to make everyone around him feel special, whether it was through baking, his kind words, or his warm hugs. But honestly, just seeing him so happy in the kitchen was more than enough.
"They're already perfect," you said, leaning forward to watch him pour the batter into the pan. "I mean, they're Felix brownies—how could they not be?"
He glanced over his shoulder at you with a playful pout. "Flattery won't save you when you're doing dishes later."
You raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Oh? I thought the chef handled the dishes."
Felix's soft giggle filled the room. "Maybe if you're lucky."
He slid the pan into the oven and turned back to you, wiping his hands on his apron. "Now we just wait for them to bake... and hope I didn't forget anything."
You hopped off the stool and walked over to where he was standing, reaching up to gently brush the flour off his face. "You've got flour everywhere, by the way."
His eyes widened slightly, and a sheepish grin spread across his lips. "Oh. I didn't even realize."
He tilted his head to give you better access as you continued to dust off the flour from his cheeks. You could feel his warmth, his gentle presence making everything feel soft and light. There was something about Felix in the kitchen—his concentration, his joy in creating something, and how he always seemed to find ways to make the moment sweeter.
"Better?" he asked, blinking at you with that innocent look that made your heart melt.
"Much better," you confirmed, your hand lingering for just a moment before you pulled away. "You're all cleaned up now, Chef Felix."
"Thanks," he said with a soft smile, his freckles almost glowing in the afternoon light streaming through the window.
You both moved to sit at the small kitchen table, waiting for the brownies to bake. Felix fiddled with a stray napkin, clearly buzzing with excitement and anticipation. It wasn't just about the brownies, though. It was about the simple joy of sharing these little moments together.
As the minutes passed, the smell of chocolate became even more intoxicating, filling the kitchen with a warmth that matched Felix's presence.
"Do you think they'll taste better this time?" he asked, glancing at you, his voice full of curiosity.
"They'll be amazing," you replied, resting your chin in your hand as you admired the way his eyes sparkled when he talked about his baking. "Just like always."
Felix's cheeks flushed at your compliment, his bashful grin returning. "You're just saying that to be nice."
"No, I'm saying it because it's true. I've never had brownies as good as yours."
He chuckled, leaning back in his chair, finally relaxing a bit. "You're gonna get spoiled if I keep baking for you."
"I think I'm okay with that," you said, smirking as you stretched your legs out under the table.
Felix laughed again, the sound like music to your ears. He got up to check on the brownies, peeking through the oven door. "Almost ready. A few more minutes."
You couldn't wait. Felix's brownies were legendary, but part of what made them so special was the care and love he put into them. It wasn't just baking—it was him showing how much he cared, in his own sweet way.
"Do you want to help me take them out?" he asked, grabbing the oven mitts.
You hopped up, ready to assist. "I'd be honored."
With careful precision, Felix pulled the pan out of the oven, the rich scent of chocolate filling the air. The brownies had risen perfectly, the top cracked in just the right places, revealing the gooey center that you knew would taste like heaven.
"We'll have to let them cool for a bit before we can cut them," Felix said, his eyes gleaming with pride. "But I think they turned out well."
"They look amazing," you agreed, leaning on the counter beside him.
Felix smiled, looking genuinely happy. "I'm glad you think so. I wanted today to be special."
You glanced at him, touched by his words. "Every day with you is special, Felix."
He blinked, taken aback by the sincerity in your voice, and then his smile grew even wider, soft and genuine. "You're really good at making me feel appreciated, you know that?"
You laughed softly. "Well, you deserve it."
He reached over and gave your hand a gentle squeeze. "Thank you. Now, let's dig into these brownies when they're cool. I made them for us to enjoy together."
And as you waited for the brownies to cool, you couldn't help but think that the sweetest thing in the kitchen wasn't the dessert—it was Felix, and the warmth he brought into your life.
