Thick fiery lava poured over the edge of the passageway they'd just come from, melting the floor of the ziggurat. It poured off the edge, into the chasm, like a molten waterfall.
"Someone is buying us time," Shorty murmured.
"But once that chasm fills and spills over... we're dead," Emily whispered, wincing and starting to cough. She held her side - realizing that with every cough she was loosing blood from her wounds.
Lizavet grabbed Emily, pressing her hands against the worst spots. "We should not be able to breathe. We need to get out of here!"
Indy turned staring at the stone. He moved around the edge between the stone and the cave. "Lizavet - Em - get inside the tomb - I don't know how this is possible - but there's cool air coming through there!"
Lizavet moved Emily just inside, watching Indy and Shorty.
Indy pointed again. "Shorty - There's a groove. This stone once stood up and blocked the tomb! Shorty! Help me find the lever! Lizavet - can you hold back the lava with your shaman skills?"
"No, Poppa!" Lizavet shuddered, pressing against Emily. "I am working on Emily's wounds."
"Ok. Good. Keep doing that, Lizavet," Indy blinked. Through the suffocating shimmering air he saw the lever on the side of the cave and kicked it. The floor moved slightly, sloping the stone toward the groove. "Shorty!"
Standing inside the cave-like tomb, Indy pointed to the lever.
Shorty saw the lever raced toward it and took a flying leap. His foot hit the lever, pushing it downward.
The altar stone rumbled as the floor shifted. The altar eased back in place, something roaring in the chamber, echoing and putting them into darkness.
