shy
/adj/
being reserved or having or showing nervousness or timidity in the company of other people:
The sound of squeaking sneakers and volleyballs hitting skin or the floor echoed through the gym, but it was all a blur to you. You sat hidden in the shadows of the bleachers. Being around so many people made you feel shaky, your hands trembling where they were folded on your lap. You shyly peeked through your curtain of hair at the one friend you had in school.
Tanaka Ryuunosuke.
He was loud, confident, and entirely himself- everything you weren't and wished you could be. And yet, somehow, the two of you were friends.
Maybe that was because Tanaka was so open about his feelings for you. From day one, he made it known he liked you very, very much. To you, that was an impossible match-up. Someone as bold and outgoing as him with someone as shy and introverted as you? Did not compute.
Yet, there he was, grinning at you across the gym, waving enthusiastically at you, looking like a puppy whose owner just came home. The moment his eyes caught yours, his face lit up like a Christmas tree.
Even in the middle of a game, he stopped in the middle of the court to wave at you, despite his captain's protests.
"You came to watch me!" Tanaka shouted happily. Your face instantly flushed, heat rushing to your cheeks. Everyone's eyes were on you for a moment and the overwhelming amount of attention made your heart stutter in your chest.
You gave a small, awkward wave back to Tanaka. You hoped that would satisfy him and he would calm down but, Tanaka being Tanaka, it only seemed to excite him more.
"Did you see that?" he asked Nishinoya, a wild grin on his face, "(Y/n) waved at me! I'm gonna win this match for her!"
You couldn't help but smile- Tanaka was so genuine, so eager, that you found it endearing. Sure, he could be overwhelming, but at least he was unapologetically, unashamedly himself.
The match ended not long after you'd taken your seat, with Karasuno as the undisputed winner. You stood up, slinging your backpack over your shoulder. You planned to slip out of the gym while the team was too busy celebrating to notice, but before you could leave, a sweaty Tanaka blocked your way, grinning widely and panting slightly.
"(Y/n)!" he said excitedly, "Did you see me out there? Did you see that last spike?" He was practically bouncing, waiting for your response eagerly.
A timid smile made its way to your lips, "Y-yeah, you did great."
Tanaka puffed out his chest with pride at your compliment. His grin softened and he took a step closer, his voice quiet and almost tender, "You know... I play that hard because I want to impress you."
Your cheeks heated up and you looked away. Tanaka was always blunt about his feelings, but it still managed to fluster you. When you looked back at him, your breath caught in your throat. His eyes were swirling with an emotion you couldn't quite place, darker than before. It made you feel trapped in place.
"I'm not that special..." you mumbled, glancing down at your crocs, "You don't have to-"
"You are special!" Tanaka interrupted, his voice filled with conviction. He reached out and gently tucked a lock of hair behind your ear, "You're everything to me!"
Your eyes widened and you pulled back. It was too intense- his words, his expression, all of it! It was too much for you.
Tanaka looked hurt by your reaction. His smile faltered and his hand hovered in the air next to your ear, frozen in place. His boisterous energy dimmed, confusion pulling his lips into a frown and drawing his eyebrows together.
You shifted awkwardly and took another step back. The tension was too much for your heart to handle, "Tanaka, I- I didn't mean..." you started, your soft voice trailing off at the end.
"No," Tanaka let out a strained laugh and the usual carefree grin returned to his face, "It's okay! I get it, you're just... shy, right? I must have come on too strong."
You nodded, "Y-yeah. I'm just not used to it." The truth was, you didn't think you could handle his affection any longer. And yet, you couldn't bring yourself to hurt his feelings.
He approached you carefully, like one would walk toward a feral cat, "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable, (Y/n). But I care about you so much. More than anyone else ever could."
You tensed up as he took another step closer, a hand outstretched like he was trying to keep you calm. The way he had said that last sentence, though, made you feel like cornered prey.
"Tanaka..." your voice came out like a squeak. Before you could figure out what you wanted to say, Tanaka's hand reached out and took yours. The contact was warm, but his grip was much too firm, like a chain wrapping around your wrist.
"I'll make sure no one else looks at you the way I do," he said softly, thumb tracing circles over the back of your hand, "You're mine, (Y/n)."
Panic started to seize you, but you still couldn't bring yourself to pull away or speak up. You stared up at him, with big, watery eyes and a trembling lip.
He cooed at you, "Aww, don't look so afraid. I'll always be here for you. I'll protect you until the day I die." His grip tightened around your hand, and you frantically tried to pull out of his hold. Tanaka's eyes narrowed and his grip became crushing.
"Please," you whimpered.
"Don't worry," Tanaka reassured you, "I won't let anyone come between us."
The gym was empty- your hopes of escape were low. His grin seemed so much more sinister than before and his eyes were dark with that unfamiliar emotion you'd seen before.
"I'll never let you go..."
