Karthik
I cupped her face and kissed her forehead.
She closed her eyes and kept a hand on my chest and the other on my thigh, her lips apart in an open invitation but then her words from the swords room came to my mind, “Bhai sa, I can’t marry Karthik, not right now”. The memory hit hard and I controlled myself. “I think you should get some rest now” She looked at me with a questionable expression but I didn’t say anything so she excused herself with a “yeah”.
Shit that’s not how I wanted this to end. But I think she still needs some time and I am willing to wait for her. I wanted to confess to her in that moment and tell her how much I love her and since how long I have just loved her. Even long before our engagement. That ever since I came to my senses, I have only loved her. My first crush. My childhood love. When our parents announced our engagement on my birthday, I was genuinely happy but she wasn’t, I could see it in her eyes that she wasn’t happy. Since then, she started maintaining some distance from me. Then next year I went abroad for my master, she bid me goodbye with a beautiful chain,
As the memory flashed through my mind, I traced a hand through my necklace and allowed myself to drown in it.
“Karthik, we have to leave in an hour to the airport”. I had an evening flight so that morning Chavi and her family came to surprise me and bid farewell. We talked and had lunch. I had to do some final packing so, I came to my room after lunch. Shikha accompanied me to help but looks like helping wasn’t really her plan. She kept telling me about her long list of things to get from there. After about half an hour, Chavi came to my room. She looked really nervous and beautiful in her suit.
“Oh sis, why are you standing at the door, come in” She came inside and sat next to Shikha on the bed, “I was just telling brother, what and all to get for me from London. You can also tell him if you need anything.” Just then, Maa called Shikha and she left, leaving me and Chavi alone in silence. what made it more awkward was the closed door. Neither of us said anything for the next few minutes, in the hope that Shikha would return and the tension in air would be released.
“So, do you want me to get anything for you” I finally said breaking the ice.
“No, I don’t need anything.”
“You sure? Shikha, literally gave me a whole list and still she added a few more things just now”
“I am sure, I don’t need anything.” She said chuckling softly.
There was again complete silence, “I brought something for you” she took out a box and passed it to me, I was surprised but a lot more curious so I took the box and opened it and to my surprise, it was a beautiful platinum chain with an infinity locket. Chavi was very young when we had a conversation about infinity. I was explaining her a maths equation and the result was infinity. “What is infinity”
“Something that has no end”.
“no end.”
“yeah like us, we will always be together, there will be no end.” And as you can tell I was already in love with her at that time. Back to the moment, I walked to her side of the bed “I love it, thank you Chavi, this means a lot more for me, than you can think.” I was genuinely astonished by the gift. She got up, “I am glad you like it, promise me you’ll always keep it”
“I promise” I pulled her into a friendly hug “Thank you Chavi,” She wrapped her arms around me,
“Karthik, Take good care of yourself there.” I stroked a hand through her hair. Given her height she always fits perfectly with me. “I will and you too, ok” I kissed the top of her head. She gently nodded in yes. That memory is one of my most cherished memory of us.
