The vampire sat in a worn and gray easy chair stiffly, his dark soulful eyes raised to the ceiling. The room in which he rested was unlit and dark as it always was. Books were stacked neatly around the room of all kinds of genres and authors. Some were priceless in monetary value. The moon was waning outside the one small window and tonight the stars were bright. Somewhere in the woods a snake ate a mouse, then a hawk caught and ate the snake in the endless circle of life.
All of this the vampire was aware of yet not. He was remembering a time long ago, before he had been changed. He had been married, with one son. They had lived happily in a big house, they'd had a ranch and slaves that he was never harsh with. His wife adored the maid and they did everything together. It had been a depressing day indeed when his son declared he was going off to join war and do his part to help his country.
Vincent could do nothing to dissuade him. He was alot like his father in that fact. The vampire could remember every night and day, waiting and waiting for those suits to appear at his door. He'd had nightmares of them knocking, of him and his wife going to answer. That heavy weight of dread when they would see the navy blue. "The military sends their regrets. I'm sorry to inform you, but..."
That was how it would start, how they would say it. He always wondered what kind of man deserved the job of telling families that their son or father or brother had been killed in action. They had never come though. he saw no blue coats at his door.
The war had come to them and dropped a bomb on their house killing his wife, destroying his home and ranch and his entire life, the only thing he'd had left was his son. Two days after the dropping of the bomb he had recieved a letter. A letter. Telling him his son was dead.
He had lost everything in a matter of days.
That night he went and got dead drunk. He could barely move. But he knew that as soon as he could he was going to kill himself. He couldn't live without his wife and son. His wife had been so sweet. She had barely survived child birth.
Tears streamed down his face and he grasped the dagger with shaking hands and with a sob threw it forward, intending for it to end him.
But the dagger stopped halfway and at first his drunken mind didn't comprehend what was happening. Then he looked up and saw the shady figure of a man, his deathly white hands tightened over his own, preventing the dagger from penetrating his heart.
The skeletal apparition leaned forward and in a voice as cold and clear as ice, a voice Vincent never forgot, said "Hello Vincent, I can make it all go away." Then he was at his throat and Vincent was too shocked and drunk to make any noise but a low, animalistic moan.
The vampire sighed and stood. Elmira reminded him of his long lost son. He had watched her since Lee had taken her in. They had both consulted and come to the agreement that El was the one. The only person to survive an attack in hundreds of years and then also survive the first transformation. She laughed in the face of death and had a very strong soul. Vincent could see it like an aura.
The vampire had commited himself to aiding the wolf in her journey. to doing whatever was in his power to help her prevent this man Dante from what he planned.
Vincent knew from experience that the governmen, people in general, could not except that there were beings stronger than them, beings that could hurt them any time they wanted to. People could not live in that kind of world without trying to descimate the stronger force. Humans could not live without war. Vincent knew that. He was going to protect Elmira.
The vampire looked down at the cordless telephone, called a cellular telephone, that lay now on his palm. This was the device in which Lee had called to inform him that it had begun.
