CHAPTER EIGHT
Alana
Two Days Later
I was going to come home this morning until John B texted me and told me that the social worker was at our house and already tried to take him and wanted me to spill where I was currently since I wasn't home. He just said to stay put.
Sarah went out to run some errands and told me to stay in the guest room until further notice. Her dad, Ward, heard the panic in my voice when I asked him if it was alright if I hid out here for a few more days.
Ward said he owes it to my dad to make sure I'm safe and sound. He's been in and out of his personal office though taking phone calls since he got back from his weekend trip. Rafe went golfing yesterday and has been in his room groaning all day about feeling sick from the heat. I think he's just hungover.
Currently I'm laying backwards on the bed in the guest room reading a book that per usual once belonged to my mother. A romance about two unlikely lovers. The guy, Liam, is from a farm in Omaha and moves to New York City where he meets Nicole, a fashion icon who doesn't even like dirt from the sidewalk getting on her shoes let alone going to Omaha to visit Liam's family farm. It's corny and predictable at the turn of every page but it amuses me and what brings a big smile to my face is all the little notes my mother made. How she underlines all the dirty parts of it and sometimes adds a little checkmark.
I figured out a while ago the checkmark means she's been there done there either with or without my dad. Which is almost unsettling to think about but it's funny to know she was human too. She lived her life and maybe someday I'll add my own checkmarks.
"The hell is that?" Rafe grunts from the door frame. "Did you find that at the lost and found in a nursing home? Fucking thing is older than my grandfather."
"It wasn't my personal pick for the summer." If I had it my way I would have read my mother's copy of Pride and Prejudice all summer long like I typically do. But that's the book that went in the water with JJ.
Rafe nods with his arms crossed, leaning against the frame of the door. "Then what would have been?"
"A different stupid romance book but my boyfriend dropped it into the marsh."
He pauses. "Did he replace it?"
I narrow my glare. "No. Why would he?"
Rafe scoffs and takes a step toward me. "Because he's your boyfriend and he ruined it. He should replace it."
"He offered to steal me a new one."
"Steal you one?"
I hum my answer to him. "Mhm."
"Why aren't you at his house? Why are you still here?" Rafe looks down at the floor. "I'm not kicking you out I'm just curious is all."
I sit straight up and tilt my head to the side. Watching as he avoids eye contact with me. He only dared to look at me for a few seconds the other night and that was only because he was drunk and high out of his mind. I don't even think he realized that he was looking at me because of all the substances that were coursing through his veins.
"I don't feel safe at his house."
Rafe looks at me for a brief moment. "You don't feel safe at his house?"
