Xu Qianchun realized halfway through the fight that she shouldn't be hitting others in the face.
She retracted her fists, but by then, the two boys were already bruised and battered. Soon, someone ran to report the incident, informing the head official about the brawl.
When the head official rushed over and saw the situation, his head began to spin.
On one side stood the Assistant Minister's younger sister, and on the other, the sons of other officials—each faction too influential to offend! Yet a public brawl was something that couldn’t be easily overlooked.
How could the Assistant Minister's younger sister stir up so much trouble?
The head official sighed in frustration and finally said, “Students of Hongdu Academy getting into a private brawl—it’s absolutely disgraceful! Tomorrow, I will summon your parents—or your eldest sister!”
Xu Qianchun nodded, her expression unchanged.
The two boys, who had initially intended to cause trouble, now looked at each other with expressions of dread. Suddenly, they plopped down on the ground in a display of defiance, shouting, “No! We won’t call anyone!”
The head official replied, “Even if you don’t call, your fathers will find out!”
The two boys began to wail and cry, regret flooding over them.
After school, Xu Qianchun packed her things to go home, pondering how she would explain the incident to Xu Zhen.
Feeling troubled, her brow slightly furrowed, she left the academy and unknowingly walked into a former ruin. This derelict area had once been part of the Xu family estate.
The setting sun cast a reddish hue over the horizon, and smoke wafted in the air. Nearby lay broken walls and remnants of the past—a sight that was hard to bear.
The old Xu family residence had been more than half demolished; it was already dilapidated but was now merely a pile of rubble and scattered timber. The formerly whitewashed walls had turned black and crumbled, the intricately carved doors and windows were covered in cobwebs, and what was once a home filled with esteemed guests now had only a few wildflowers growing amidst the debris.
Tucked away in a deep alley, the residence was too remote for its own good, and given its history of misfortune, it was now under public custody with no buyers in sight.
Faded decorative tiles peeked out from the walls, and two or three birds squawked noisily.
Xu Qianchun stood still, carrying her small green bag, gazing up in silence at the sight before her.
A sudden gust of hot wind swept across the river, blowing into Xu Qianchun's eyes and forcing her to close them.
When she opened her eyes again, they had taken on a deep blue hue.
At that moment, she noticed a woman in a bright blue outfit standing before her, having appeared without her realizing it.
The woman’s striking attire caught Xu Qianchun’s attention. She looked into Xu Qianchun’s eyes and, before Xu Qianchun could say anything, began to laugh—a clear, bright sound. “I thought it was someone else; it turns out to be you! What brings you back to Chang’an?”
Xu Qianchun regarded her with a glance.
The woman in blue was the same one who had been in the corner of the tavern, holding someone and biting their lip. Xu Qianchun had a poor impression of her and chose to ignore her.
The woman continued to smile. “Not going to speak again?”
Xu Qianchun remained silent.
“You used to be just a blockhead, but now you’re acting like an ice cube!” The woman waved her round fan. “That day at the tavern, when I saw you, I thought I was mistaken. You really came to Chang’an? Aren’t you supposed to be hiding and not daring to show yourself?”
