When Xu Zhen woke up, she realized she was still holding Xu Qianchun’s hand, but the numbers had stopped fluctuating above her.
What a pity.
She accessed the merit point system and calculated that she had earned over two thousand points last night, bringing her total close to four thousand.
Overwhelmed, tears brimmed in her eyes.
Back in the day, doing good deeds meant earning only a single point for each action. Now, simply holding the villain’s little hand had allowed her to earn two thousand points in one night!
It was more than she could have ever imagined—truly too much.
Unable to resist, Xu Zhen continued to touch Xu Qianchun’s hands but then remembered she still needed to go to work. She quickly released her grip, stood up, and walked towards the door.
Her footsteps echoed softly on the wooden floor.
As she opened the door, a gust of cold wind blew in; Xu Zhen raised her hand to shield herself from the wind. Pushing against it, she stepped outside, closed the door behind her, and made her way to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
Inside the house, the cold air lingered, with white mist swirling before slowly settling down.
On the soft bed, Xu Qianchun lay on her side, her dark hair fanned out around her. It was rare for her to wake up late. As she felt the warmth beside her disappear, slowly giving way to coldness, she gradually opened her eyes and focused on her own hands.
She watched intently for a long time before sitting up and pressing her hands against her chest.
In that moment, a warm sensation spread throughout her body, and Xu Qianchun concentrated on it intensely.
As she savored this feeling, the joy in her heart grew stronger; it was truly puzzling.
…
The sky was somewhat gloomy today, with fewer passersby on the streets than usual. Many pleasure boats were moored along the river, all outwardly attractive but completely useless; at the first sign of a stormy wave, they would surely break apart immediately.
As Xu Zhen walked along the street, gazing at the heavy clouds in the distance, her heart felt equally weighed down.
Before heading to work, she took a stroll around the bookstore, where the owner informed her that the books had been selling like hotcakes these past few days. He had taken the initiative to copy an additional hundred copies, and everyone was eagerly asking for the sequel..
Xu Zhen suddenly felt uneasy and asked, “What were their thoughts after reading it?”
“Thoughts?” The bookstore owner replied, “Of course they have! Everyone is very curious about what will happen next!”
Xu Zhen exclaimed, “What? That can’t be it! Don’t you have anything else to share?”
The owner continued, “Well, yes, actually. There are also great scholars who have pointed out elements of Confucian and Daoist knowledge in it. Is that what you intended to convey?”
Xu Zhen shook her head. “No, I meant to ask if no one is interested in how to save themselves from a flood?”
The owner paused for a moment, then laughed. “Chang’an hasn’t had a flood in many years, so I suppose no one pays attention to that.”
… That seemed to differ greatly from what she had anticipated.
Xu Zhen felt a sense of disappointment; her plans were falling through, leaving her feeling sad.
