CHAPTER ELEVEN
Rafe
JJ Maybank's eyes burned into me but that isn't what bothered me. What bothered me was that Alana felt the need to hide herself completely when she realized he was here and if she hadn't done that I'd have automatically assumed she told him we were coming here tonight.
By her reaction it's clear she didn't invite him and didn't even want him to be aware that she was here. Slowly she took each piece of her makeshift disguise off and walked across the yard while rubbing her arm slowly.
My eyes did not falter away from her once. I've never seen her interact with this boyfriend of hers and from what I can see already it isn't his house she doesn't feel safe at. She clearly does not feel safe around her own boyfriend who isn't smiling at her at all.
He points in her face a few times and she puts her head down to look away from him. Before I can rise to my feet, Pope is there and he's handling it very well. Putting his hand up to block JJ from getting closer to Alana and then turning to face her, pushing her hair away from her face and asking if she's okay.
Alana nods and Pope motions for her to just head back over this way before he sits back down with JJ who is red as crimson and muttering to himself. When Alana comes back over and sits down next to me she just reaches into her bag and pulls out her book.
"Another romance?"
She shakes her head. "Eh, more like a book of life lessons and self-discovery."
"Shocker." I take not of all the sticky notes plastered on the pages and handwritten notes. But they don't look as old as the one she had this morning. "What is it?"
"Seriously, Rafe Cameron? Just leave me alone."
"Alana, I'm trying to talk to you... Don't make me use the magic word again."
She closes the book and places it in my lap. "You're stupid. I told you it's not a magic word I just made it up to be a jerk to you."
I pick the book up in my hands. Dead Poets Society which in my eyes is an absolute classic. The cover is a recent one and the pages aren't as torn up as the rest. But my mind is still reeling on what she said rather than the book she placed in my lap.
"If it's not magic then why has it worked every time since? When I wanted you to sit with me at the party? Just today getting you back in the car?"
Silence.
"I'm going to get some drinks, you want something?" I ask to see if she reacts at all. Which she does. She nods and I ask her what she wants and to my surprise she stands up and crosses her arms.
"I'll just go with you."
"Nah, I got it. You say here with Kelce and Topper. Everyone is actually cool now so they'll keep watch on you. I promise."
Reluctantly she sits back down and I hand her back her book. I rise to my feet and ask the guys what they want to drink. Alana chimes in with her request and I head over to their makeshift snack bar here to order some drinks for us.
Kie is in front of me and orders some too and that's when I feel the need to say something to her. "Hey Kie."
"Rafe."
"How you doing?" I ask try to force myself to be polite. She's not been the nicest to my sister and I thought she was Alana's friend but she didn't even both to check on her at all when JJ was just cussing her out.
