The yellow sand at Longmen was particularly thick. The chess hall was one of the few tea houses in the area, but the streets were largely empty as people sought shelter indoors to escape the wind and sand.
The chess hall's construction was quite informal; even the private room was simply decorated with wind-blocking cloth and some decorative flowers.
As the governor of Yongzhou entered the room, he was about to resume his chess game when a series of loud knocks echoed from outside. With no subordinates around and the chess hall owner being an elderly scholar, he had no choice but to angrily step outside and shout, "What do you want?!"
Seeing the Governor come out, Xu Zhen felt pleased and quickly said, "Governor, I need a permit to enter and exit the military camp!"
The Governor responded, "That's impossible."
After saying this, he raised his hand to close the door again.
Xu Zhen quickly clarified, "It's fine if you just let me go to the enclosure outside. I only want to bring some food to my sister."
The Governor retorted, "I said it's impossible!"
He was prepared to find someone to remove Xu Zhen from the premises.
At that moment, a calm male voice unexpectedly came from inside the room, asking, "Who's outside?"
The Governor's expression shifted slightly as he responded, "Just a poor, ignorant scholar who doesn't know her place."
Upon hearing this, Xu Zhen suddenly realized she hadn't introduced herself yet and was about to do so. However, the voice from inside the room interrupted, asking, "Why did they interrupt our conversation?"
The Governor replied, "I don't know," and began to close the door.
Sensing her last chance slipping away, Xu Zhen quickly slipped into the room, trying to blend into a corner. She was dressed in a dirty white commoner's outfit, with the hem covered in dirt, and her head was wrapped in a scarf that allowed some loose, messy hair to show. She looked bedraggled and dusty, like someone who had just come back from shoveling snow.
The private room was neat and simple, featuring two tables, one of which had a partially set-up chessboard surrounded by two wicker baskets. A middle-aged man with salt-and-pepper hair sat on a wall-mounted couch.
As soon as Xu Zhen entered, regret hit her. She feared she had offended the Governor. Yongzhou was vast, and the Governor had been stationed there for many years. Now, having barged in uninvited, she worried about causing trouble.
Feeling anxious, she contemplated her next move and looked up with a nervous smile, ready to apologize. But it was too late.
The Governor approached with a fierce expression, intent on throwing Xu Zhen out.
Thinking quickly, Xu Zhen exclaimed, "I interrupted your conversation for a reason!"
"A reason?"
The middle-aged man on the couch, intrigued and puzzled by her outburst, gestured for the Governor to stop.
Suddenly, the room fell silent.
Xu Zhen, who had previously been reckless in Chang'an, now felt like she was in survival mode, much like her time in Jiangling. She felt entirely out of place.
Clearing her throat twice, she prepared to explain who she was.
The middle-aged man asked, "What is the reason?"
Xu Zhen started, "To both of you, I actually am-"
But the Governor cut her off sharply, "If you waste any more words and don't answer the Duke's question, I'll throw you out the window!"
