I

December 24, 1863

"Darling, he's turning 21 today. He deserves to know."

"I know, Ana, I know. He's my son it's going to be hard to tell him."

"I know that Samual. But I think our son deserves to know his father is dying and that very soon he is going to be the next ruler of Avinon."

"Anastasia, you need to relax. I'm going to tell him but not tonight. It's his birthday and let's not ruin that for him."

"You're right."

"Shall we go prepare for this evening?"

"Yes."

(Louis' POV)

I was running.

I had to get away.

My father is dying.

I can't do this.

I ignored everyone calling my name until I was outside and the frigid December air encased my skin. I was wearing party clothes after all. It was midday and everyone was preparing for my party tonight but I didn't really care.

I couldn't get my mother's words out of my head.

"...our son deserves to know his father is dying..."

I hear my father call my name from the balcony of his office and I sprint faster, running out of the gates of the palace into the bustling city.

Everyone parts ways as I run through the crowd. Their all gasping and whispering because why is the prince running away?

No one knows do they?

I can't believe no one told me. How long has he been dying? Why was he dying?

I couldn't control the thoughts running through my head.

I heard someone call my name again as I rounded a corner.

"Oh my! I am so sorry are you alright?"

I was confused what happened?

That is when I realized the searing pain in my back. I was so consumed in my own thoughts that I hadn't even realized I ran into someone.

"Um, Sir? Are you alright?"

I looked up and my eyes met dark brown ones.

She was stunning. Her long brunette hair cascaded down her shoulders and back in perfect curls and she was wearing a midnight black gown which complemented her olive complexion very well.

"Sir are-"

"I am fine." I replied hastily once I realized I was staring at her.

"Are you sure? You were running very hard and the when you rounded the corner you slipped in some water and fell pretty hard."

"I am positive."

"Oh! Here let me help you up."

I gingerly took her hand and allowed her to help me gain my balance.

"Here come in and let me get you a drink."

"Really, Miss, I'm alright. I should probably get back to the palace before they send a search party."

"But... Sir. You blacked out. I really do not think that you should be going home alone."

Her eyes widened and I was confused.
