My phone rings and rings with no answer for the third time. I'm tingling with anxiety. I can only imagine how Jisoo felt when she tried calling me ten different times with no answer.
Biting the inside of my cheek, I pull my phone away and start another call. I still don't know where Jisoo is. Hopefully, she's safe at the hotel now.
"Y/N!"
"Jisoo!" I almost scream her name. "I am so sorr-"
"What the hell happened? Are you okay? Where the hell were you?"
"It's a long story," I sigh. "I'll tell you tomorrow, bu-"
"No." Jisoo's word is like ice. "I need to know now. Did you go after Kun?"
I go silent, nearly swallowing my tongue. "I don't want to discuss this over the phone," I say quietly. It feels wrong to have a conversation that is likely to become an argument over the phone, especially in the middle of the night at a hospital.
"I can't believe you actually went after him," Jisoo ignores what I say. "I know you're focused on revenge or whatever, but come on, Y/N! You're smarter than this!"
It doesn't take much to make my blood boil. "What does that mean?"
"Ever since you befriended Mingyu and got closer to him, you've gotten more involved with Seventeen. It's like they have been preparing you for this! Can't you see?"
"No, because that's absurd. I wasn't forced to help them. Even if I was uncomfortable, it was my choice."
"But if it made you uncomfortable, you shouldn't have done it." I can hear how Jisoo is standing. With her arms crossed and shaking her head. "They're taking advantage of you."
"Jisoo, stop it!" I raise my voice. "I'm not a child. I'm an adult, and I've been one for quite some time. I'm choosing to help them. You're acting as if you are my mother."
Jisoo sucks in a breath. Her following words are slow and stern. "Your love for Mingyu is making you blind to what is happening."
Tears—not from mourning or pain but from anger—spring into my eyes. My anger is about to bubble over. I stalk away from Minghao's room. I need to get to a place where I can adequately argue with Jisoo. "How dare you say that! And really, do you think I'm just doing all of this because Seventeen is tricking me into it? Do you seriously think that Jeonghan is tricking me into avenging Changkyun's life?"
"He's using it to take advantage of you." She speaks with such surety. It feels as if I'm talking to a blank wall. "I can't believe you don't see it."
"I don't understand what you see," I spit back, walking out of the hospital building and into a small garden area. "I get that you don't understand my past, but that part of me is still here. I'm a criminal; I always have been. And it's sure as hell better than being a waitress!"
"You say that until you're in jail again. Probably because Mingyu will rat you out to save his ass. There's a reason those two are friends, y'know."
Thousands of aweful—evil—things pop in my mind, ready to shoot back at Jisoo, but nothing comes. It's like my brain jammed. I stare ahead of me, blurring the green together. There's a slight static in my ear as Jisoo stays quiet.
Mingyu would never do that. He's better than that. Minghao wouldn't do it again? Has he learned from his past? Am I safe with Seventeen?
"I'm only trying to look out for you."
"Stop. Whatever you do or say isn't going to change my mind. I think... this is where I belong."
"I hope you're not wrong." Jisoo hangs up.
