Arriving home with Jake from youth group was such a relief, it turned out Lyra also decided to come to youth group to. In all honesty I don’t think father Adams appreciated it that much, due to she is not fully committed to the religion. After youth group Lyra wanted to go back to Jakes but thankfully Rupert (Andrews dad) said firmly “No sorry Lyra, there is business we have to take care of” We dropped her home and Rupert told us what that business we had to take care of was.
“Jake and Adelaide, Listen now and listen carefully. Bud left home this morning and never turned up to school and he is still not home, now we have our family Jake, Your family Adelaide and also Libby’s family out looking for him but as of yet he has not turned up so we are going past our house first Jake. I need you and Adelaide to get the tents and Jake you will need a change of clothes as we are going to camp at Adelaide’s tonight. Got it?” I just nod not knowing what else to do. Bud always goes off, but he is generally home by now. Growing up Bud and I were always close; I was a dead set ‘tomboy’. We would either be swing from trees or swimming in the damn, or when we living in Ireland we would play in the potatoes fields. He was my best friend, until a year ago things started to change he got into this wrong crowd and from there things simply went downhill.
The car comes to a sudden halt; Jake jumps out of the car though I am quick behind. We run into his room and his starts throwing clothes into a bag, a photo of Jake and I catches my eye. I pick it up and smile, Jake had just won the district soccer player of the year trophy and I had just one the district Athlete of the year ribbon, we were both smiling. We were eleven.
“I always look at that photo” Jake says behind me, I jump and turn to look at him.
“What happened to us Jake?” I look up into his eyes and continue “When I moved here you were always there for me, always standing up for me, never letting me out of your sight, you were so protective of me, what changed?”
His frowns, creases forming in his forehead.
“What happened to us? Are you serious Adelaide? We grew up, you stood up for yourself, you don’t need me like you used to. I don’t understand you at times anymore. You have everything; you are for fuck sake brilliant at everything. Sport, you never come last, actually you always come in the top three, School? Well let’s see… You never get anything below eighty%, Social life? You have friends galore, Family? You have the most amazing family, brothers and sisters who look up to you like you would not believe. Your parents are always so proud of you, you know what? When our parents have dinner together mine come home and say how I should be more like you! I am over it Adelaide!”
I feel my legs slowly collapse beneath me.
“Jake I am not good at everything; I came last in my race on the weekend, LAST! I watched as all the girls ran past me. School I got 60 % last week. You don’t know my social life, and family well at times there the only people there for me. I never knew you were over it.” I said tears now streaming down my face. I turn to look at his though he looks away. I walk out slowly “Oh and by the way I did get into the boys soccer team” I yelled over the top of my head.
I decided that walking home seemed like the best option although it was a good fifteen minute walk. I can’t believe that Jake and I argued again, it’s our third argument in a month. As I near closer to home I can see the camp fire.
“Adelaide, honey where have you been?” I lift up my head as I see dad running over to me.
“I walked from Jakes, We argued again” I tried to smile. Dad pulled me into a hug.
