A gust of chilling wind made me shiver, but I was too excited to care. My eyes easily adjusting to the fading light, the bits of sky between the bare trees and above them was a glowing pink and orange. At times like this, I knew I belonged here. My eyes searched the bushes and trunks of trees for those familiar, haunting eyes.
Once more an unexpected wind buffeted me, blowing my pale blond hair into my face. Snow began to fall, melting against my unnaturally warm skin. I pulled my hair away from my face, tucking it behind my ears. When I looked up my heart stopped.
There, standing at the edge of the forest, was a reddish, brown wolf. The snow began to fall thicker, sticking to the wolf's fur, making him look ghostly. I sat still on a fallen tree, wishing I could place where I had seen those bright jade eyes before. Even when I looked away I knew that he was still waiting for me, wishing I would find a way to join him.
But, I didn't know how.
I had always thought I was normal, that I fit in with the pack. But when I realized that the other wolves couldn't join me I knew I was doomed. Doomed to sit by the edge of the woods every night, stuck in this unfamiliar body while my pack painfully waited for me to go with them. Ever since I turned 15 I had been stuck this way. I had been taken in by a normal, human family. They hadn't been able to have children, so instead the adopted me, poor, innocent, gentle, Saphiria.
I felt as if a piece of me was missing, trapped in the forest with those wolves. Perhaps time could mend or give it back to me.
