Chapter 29: The Decline

The palace was shrouded in an oppressive silence, a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded just days before. Maya lay in her chamber, her body frail and trembling, as the flickering candlelight cast eerie shadows on the walls. Vikram sat by her side, his heart heavy with worry as he watched the woman he loved slip further away.

“Maya, please,” Vikram said, gently brushing her hair back from her forehead. “You need to eat something. You can’t just lie here!”

“I can’t… I can’t, Vikram,” Maya whispered, her voice weak and breathy. “I feel so cold. Something is wrong.”

Vikram’s chest tightened at her words. “It’s just the stress, the palace’s darkness. Once we find a way to banish Rani’s spirit, you’ll feel better. I promise.”

Maya’s eyes fluttered open, revealing deep shadows beneath them. “No, it’s not just that. Rani touched me… I felt her. She’s trying to take me, Vikram. I can feel her coldness inside me.”

“Rani?” Vikram’s voice rose in alarm. “We dealt with her! She can’t touch you anymore. You’re safe.”

But Maya shook her head slowly, tears gathering in her eyes. “I wish I could believe that. But every night, I hear her whispers. I see her shadow lurking in the corners… it’s suffocating me.”

Just then, the door creaked open, and Arav stepped inside, his expression grave. “I heard shouting. Is everything alright?”

“Maya is unwell,” Vikram replied, his voice taut with anxiety. “We need to find a healer—someone who can help her.”

Arav’s brows knitted together in concern as he approached the bed. “Maya, what do you feel?”

“It’s hard to explain,” she replied, her voice trembling. “It’s like… something dark is wrapping around me, pulling me down. I can’t escape it.”

As if summoned by her words, a chilling breeze swept through the room, causing the candles to flicker violently. Maya shivered, and Vikram instinctively moved closer, wrapping his arms around her protectively.

“Stay with us, Maya,” Arav said, placing a hand on her shoulder. “We’ll find a way to get you through this.”

A soft whimper escaped Maya’s lips as her eyes drifted closed. “I’m scared… I’m so scared. What if I can’t fight her?”

“Don’t think like that!” Vikram said firmly, his heart racing. “We’ve faced her before, and we can do it again. Just hold on a little longer.”

Suddenly, the door burst open, and a palace servant stumbled into the room, his face pale and trembling. “My lord! My lady! You must leave the palace! There’s talk among the servants… they say Rani’s ghost is angry!”

Vikram’s eyes widened. “What do you mean? Rani is gone! We dealt with her spirit!”

“Not entirely,” the servant replied, his voice shaking. “She’s been seen moving through the halls. Items have gone missing, and… and… there’s a servant dead in the east wing. They say Rani is taking revenge!”

A gasp escaped Maya’s lips, and she sat up suddenly, fear radiating from her. “Dead? Who? What happened?”

“The word is spreading,” the servant said, backing away as if Rani herself would appear at any moment. “People are fleeing, saying the palace is cursed. They fear for their lives.”

Arav clenched his fists, anger flickering in his eyes. “This cannot be happening! We can’t let fear take over. We need to confront this once and for all!”

“Maya needs to rest,” Vikram insisted, looking from Arav to the servant. “Get the other servants to calm down. We can’t have everyone running away!”

“But it’s true!” the servant protested. “We’re all scared! I have to go! If Rani is after you, she could be after all of us!”

“Enough!” Vikram’s voice cut through the tension. “You need to stay and help. We can’t let Rani win by spreading fear. Gather the others and keep them close. We’re stronger together.”

The servant hesitated before nodding slowly. “I’ll try, my lord, but… if Rani’s spirit is here, I don’t know how long we can last.”

As the servant turned to leave, Maya’s breath hitched in her throat. “Vikram, I feel weak. I can’t… I can’t breathe.”

“Just focus on my voice, Maya. You’re not alone,” Vikram soothed, his heart aching as he brushed his thumb across her cheek. “You’re going to be okay. I promise.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Maya murmured, her eyes fluttering shut again. “I’m slipping, Vikram. I can feel it.”

“Stay with me, Maya,” Vikram pleaded, panic gripping him. “I need you to fight! Please!”

But as Maya lay back against the pillows, her breathing grew ragged, and the shadows in the room seemed to close in around them, dark tendrils creeping along the walls.

“I’m so tired,” Maya whispered, her voice barely audible. “What if I can’t fight anymore?”

“Don’t say that! You’re the strongest person I know,” Vikram urged, trying to keep his voice steady. “We’ll find a way to stop her. We’ll banish her spirit once and for all!”

Just then, the air turned cold, and a low, haunting laugh echoed through the room. Vikram felt a chill race down his spine as he turned to see a dark shadow creeping at the edge of the room.

“Maya…” he said, his voice trembling as he gripped her hand tighter. “Stay with me. Don’t close your eyes.”

“I… I can’t help it,” she murmured, the shadows pulling at her consciousness. “She’s here… I can feel her.”

“Maya!” Vikram shouted, desperation clawing at him as he tried to pull her back to him. “Fight! You have to fight!”

But as the darkness thickened, Maya’s eyelids began to droop, and her breaths came slower, her body succumbing to the cold that enveloped her.

“Vikram… I don’t know if I can…” she breathed, her voice fading into the whispering shadows.

“No! No! Don’t leave me!” Vikram cried, shaking her gently. “I won’t let her take you. Not now. Not ever!”

The shadows coiled tighter, and Vikram felt himself being pulled into a dark abyss, the world around him fading. The laughter grew louder, more mocking, a haunting reminder of Rani’s fury.

“Get away from her!” Vikram screamed, feeling helpless. He turned to Arav, whose expression mirrored his own desperation. “We can’t let her take her!”

“I’ll get help!” Arav shouted, rushing to the door. “Stay strong, Maya! We’re coming back for you!”

Vikram felt the shadows closing in, their grip suffocating. “Maya, hold on! Please!” he shouted, desperation thick in his voice.

As the darkness tightened, he knew time was running out. He had to save her before Rani’s spirit consumed everything, including the light that was Maya.
