The earth shook as I clung to Marcus. I saw her running to me, no, I had to protect her, and Estelle. I broke free.
"Asa!" He yelled at me. But I knew he understood, he would do the same thing, but right now he was sprawled in the snow, blood pouring out of his wound.
"Lynthia! Turn back, don't worry!" I called to my daughter, sprinting towards her.
"Mommy please, Estelle is crying, I don't know what to do." She ran, the bundle of her sister wrapped tightly in her arms.
"Darling, I love you. It will all be fine." I tried to calm her hysterics. "Just go back to the field. It will all be good."
"But what about you and Daddy!" The words sounded faint over the howling wind.
"Sweetie, I love you. And I trust you to do what I asked." Tears dripped down my face. "Please Lyn, go. I'll see you again."
I saw her hesitate. "Mommy are you sure?" Then the earth grumbled louder and a large crack appeared between us, Lynthia was knocked off her feet.
"Get up Lyn, you can do it! I'll see you again." What I didn't add was that it would be a very long time, at least, I hoped so. "I love you so much!"
A faint yelp and then I heard an, "I love you too Mommy. So does Estelle!"
I broke down right there, and managed to crawl back to Marcus. The earth rumbled and moved, the trees around us looked loose.
"Don't worry Asa, we will see them again eventually." He traced my hand with his.
"I know." I covered my body over his, as the trees fell, keeling in agony. I just hoped that Lyn and Estelle were fine. My two children could brave this world on their own, but I wished I could be here with them.
"Goodbye Marcus, you were my one true love, goodbye my sweet darlings, I will see you again." The words pounded in my head, and the last tree fell.
