Here I was, on an old, dusty bus, in the middle of nowhere. As I looked out the window all I could see was holes upon holes, what type of place is this? There wasn't a tree, or even a blade of grass in sight, just dirt and holes. It had been a long bus ride, around two hours at least, all I could think about was getting out and having a dip in the lake.
As the bus made a sudden stop, my backpack fell onto the old bus floor, making the security man look behind at me. He glared at me, so all I could do was flash him an awkward smile and pick my bag up.
The bus doors opened and the security man stood up. "Get up," he commanded. I wasn't really in a position to sass him back, so I just did as I was told and stood up. I swung my backpack on my back and followed the man out of the bus.
As soon as I stepped off the bus my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Where was the damn lake? I was greeted by a man called "Mr sir," he was a very scary looking man with a strong Texas accent and a toothpick in his mouth. I was tempted to tell him how this was false advertising, but I have a feeling he wouldn't appreciate my jokes.
I was snapped out of my thoughts as Mr. sir addressed me. "Girl, are you listening?," I looked up at him and quickly nodded. "Uh, yes Mr. sir..." He squinted his eyes at me and began to walk into the camp, me scurrying behind. "Good, because I want you to know, this ain't no girls scout camp." He said, as he continued to walk me through the camp. His voice was raspy and deep, he honestly sounded like he went through twenty fags a day. Which wouldn't surprise me if he actually did.
I could feel the eyes on me as I walked through the camp with Mr. Sir. I mean, I guess I understand. I bet these boys haven't seen a teenage girl in their whole life. Well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's probably not too far off.
He brought me into a log cabin and sat down at his desk. I stood there awkwardly before he spoke up, "Don't just stand there, sit down." He gestured to the seat in front of his desk, which I quickly sat on. My eyes darted around the log cabin, looking anywhere but at him.
"Girl, look at me." Mr sir snapped, I quickly looked at him. Snappy much? He inspected me before speaking once more, "You ain't from round' here, where you from, girl." I was expecting that, I always got comments like that. "Uh...England sir, I moved here a year ago." Mr sir snorted before speaking once more, "Only been in our country a year and already makin' trouble, eh?" I just looked down, he had a point.
"Now...this is how it works round' here," Mr sir started. He paused for a moment, looking at me as if to check if I was listening. "You get two sets of clothes you can change into. One for working, and one for relaxation. Your work ones get washed every three days. After that, your relaxation ones become your work ones."
He shoved an orange jumpsuit in my hands along with a white tank top and a pair of work boots. I stood there, looking down at the clothes in my hands, not really knowing what to do with them. "Put em on then girl." I blink. I just stay still for a moment, making Mr sir roll his eyes. "don't worry, I ain't lookin'." He turns around and I reluctantly start to get undressed. I take my baggy band shirt off and replace it with the plain white tank top. I loved that band shirt...I took my jeans off and put on the orange jumpsuit before zipping it up and putting the boots on. Mr sir turned back around before continuing his 'ted talk' as I call it. "You have to dig one hole a day, five foot deep, five foot wide. You use your shovel as a measuring stick. Understand?" I nodded and tied the laces of the boots.
"And don't bother runnin' away, you'll die. We got the only water source here for miles." I nodded slowly, picking my old clothes up and shoving them into my backpack. "I wasn't planning on it...sir." He looks at me and squints before nodding. "Good. You'll do well to remember that. And stay away from yellow spotted lizards, you get bitten by one of em, it's all over." I gulped, what type of place is this!?
