"A pair and a spare draw closer to the sounds. He won't let this one escape as he did the last." Helaena muttered

She was on the couch wedged between Rosalie and Jasper. Emmett sat on the arm on Rose's other side while Alice sat on Jasper's other side. Edward, Carlisle and Esme were all in separate chairs.

They were spending time as a family without the human.

Everyone frowned at her words.

"A pair and a spare?" Carlisle repeated, "That's 3 people."

Jasper furrowed his eyebrows, "What about the nomads?" He asked, "3 nomads are drawn to some sound. One must be a tracker who caught wind of his next prey and he won't let it escape like the last one did." He theorized

There was a reason why he was the youngest Major in the Army when he was human besides him lying about his age to join initially. It was his mind that had impressed Ulysses S. Grant.

Not only was the Jasper the youngest Major in the Army. He was the a successful spy.

Unbeknownst to the South, he was actually a Northern soldier.

Yes he has been born and raised in Houston, Texas, but he knew what was right. So at 16, he left home and traveled North. Lied about his age and joined the Army. In the following 2 years, he was promoted to major in the Army. At 19 years old, he had impressed the Northern generals so much, they sent him to infiltrate the southern Army.

Helaena smiled at her brother, thankful someone was able to figure out her vision. She never knew what they meant until it was too late.

Her visions happen through prophetic dream or visions. As a result, she often spoke in cryptic riddles that left her family fumbling.

"We'll keep a close eye on them." Carlisle said, referring to the nomads, "Already our presence has caused at least one Quileute boy to shift."

The oldest vampire in the room scrunched up her nose at the thought of the shifters. They smelt like wet dog or at least back in the 30's they did.

Alice got a far off look on her face, a clear sign that she was having a vision.

When it was over, she looked at Helaena sadly, "Caius decided that your presence was needed in Volterra. Demetri is coming in three days."

Helaena felt the venom well up in her eyes. Frozen tears that would never fall, "I don't want to." She spoke and looked at Carlisle, "I don't want to go back!" She told him brokenly, "Tell them I don't want to go back!"

Rosalie wrapped her arms around her sister, "Carlisle, she can't go back."

However, Helaena didn't really hear her. She was too busy spirally.

She couldn't go back.

She didn't want to go back.

But, if she went back... maybe she could finally reunite with her children.

How she missed their sweet little faces.

"The twins need their mother." She whispered, "Far too long they've been in the dark."

Emmett nodded, "We could run."

Jasper and Rosalie nodded at his statement as did Alice and Esme. No one wanted to see Helaena get dragged back to her mate.

Edward snarled at the thought of leaving his blood— his mate, "We can't leave."

"Lae won't survive forever with Caius!" Jasper argued while simultaneously trying to use his powers to calm her down

It hurt all of the Cullen's to see the girl like this. Trapped in an endless cycle of torture.

Carlisle sighed, "As much as I wish we could do something, Demetri is able to track both Helaena and I."

"He'd follow us to the ends of the Earth." Helaena cried, "The King would never let me go." She said brokenly

She couldn't bring herself to say his name. Why should she?

Helaena freed herself from her sister's arms and retreated to her room.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

After a while, Emmett went up to Helaena's room. He stopped at the entryway and watched her.

"The most beautiful and beloved of the gods, Balder, son of Odin, had been slain by his blind brother wielding a mistletoe shaft aimed by Loki. Balder's wife had joined him on the funeral pyre. After their funeral, they were in the world called Niflheim." She read to a painting of her children

Helaena often read and talked to the many paintings of Vaelon and Vaella. Her soft, soothing voice filled the house for hours as she talked to her children about anything that crossed her mind.

She didn't want them to miss anything she said when he had asked about it one time not long after he turned.

She was technically the oldest in the family, having been born 102 years before Carlilse and changed into a vampire 108 years before Carlilse did. However, she and Edward were the two youngest physically, as they both turned at 17.

Emmett didn't remember much about his human life, but he knew Helaena reminded him of his younger sister.

The feeling that he was her protector was very strong, however, not even he could protect against the problem that was her mate.

He was undeniably lucky that Rosalie was his mate. He just wished Helaena was as lucky as him.

"Lae," he knocked softly on the doorframe and she paused in her reading and looked at him, "Want to go hunting for bears?" He asked

He couldn't do much, but he could try to get her mind off going back to hell.

She nodded and put the book down. She reached out a hand to trace her children's faces, "I'll be back my darlings. Your uncle is taking me to get a bear."

She joined him and they went down to the first floor.

"Want to see if anyone will join us?" He asked

"It would be nice to have a family hunt." She agreed

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Everyone had agreed to join the hunt. As Emmett and Helaena wanted black bear, they decided to go to the Blue Mountains, which was 2 hours away by driving.

Thankfully, they just ran there.

Helaena was quiet— more so than usual— as she waited for her bear.

This would be the last time she had animal blood for a while.

Her mate didn't allow her to drink animal blood while she stayed in Volterra. Unless she wanted to starve, she participated when the hunting parties came in.

The first time it happened after she freed into Carlisle's care, when she returned to him she broke down in tearless sobs.

"Who we are and who we need to be to survive are two different things, Helaena." He told her, "Never apologize for doing what you have to do."

She had clung to that for hundreds of years.

And she would continue to cling to it until the end of her days.

If an end ever came.

Yes I did change Jasper's backstory. So he was NOT a confederate soldier. Instead he was in the Union Army (North) and spied on the South for them.
