Chapter 34: Whispers of the Past

The sun rose over the crumbling palace, casting a warm golden light on the ruins that had once been a symbol of grandeur. Though the destruction was evident, the air was filled with the sounds of hammers striking nails and the laughter of workers who had come to help restore the kingdom. The scent of fresh paint and new wood mingled with the lingering traces of ash, signaling a new beginning for Raja Vikram and Maya.

Maya stood on the balcony, her hair catching the breeze as she surveyed the bustling courtyard below. Despite the challenges they faced, a smile played on her lips. “Look at them, Vikram. Everyone is so eager to help. It feels like a fresh start,” she said, her eyes sparkling with hope.

Vikram joined her, resting his hands on the balcony railing. “It does. I never imagined the people would come together like this after everything we’ve been through. It gives me strength,” he replied, glancing at her with admiration. “And you, my queen, have been the heart of this effort.”

Maya turned to him, her expression softening. “We’re in this together, Vikram. It’s our home. I want to make it a place where laughter fills the halls again.” She looked out over the courtyard, where children played and workers chatted, their spirits lifted by the promise of renewal.

Just then, Arav approached them, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Your Majesties,” he called, a wide grin on his face. “The eastern wing is nearly finished. We’ve cleared out the debris, and the new walls are going up faster than I expected.”

“Excellent news, Arav!” Vikram exclaimed, pride swelling in his chest. “We’ll need that wing ready for the festival in a week.”

Maya nodded enthusiastically. “We should plan a celebration to welcome everyone back into the palace. It’s time to show them that we’re moving forward.”

Arav’s smile faded slightly, replaced with a more serious expression. “That sounds wonderful, but… I must admit I’ve heard some unsettling stories among the workers. They claim to have seen shadows moving in the corridors at night and felt cold drafts even when the windows were closed.”

Maya’s heart sank as she exchanged a glance with Vikram. “You think it’s Rani’s spirit?” she asked quietly, her voice tinged with concern.

Vikram shook his head, trying to remain optimistic. “We’ve faced her spirit before. We banished her. It’s natural for them to feel uneasy, given what happened.”

“But what if she’s not truly gone?” Maya pressed, her voice trembling slightly. “What if her anger is still lingering in these walls?”

“We can’t let fear control us,” Vikram replied firmly. “The palace is ours now. We will not be driven away by whispers or shadows.” He took a deep breath, trying to instill courage in himself and those around him.

Arav nodded, though he still seemed troubled. “I believe in you, both of you. But it might be wise to keep the workers close together at night. I’ll ensure the guards are more vigilant.”

“Thank you, Arav,” Vikram said, placing a reassuring hand on his friend’s shoulder. “We’ll address any issues as they arise. Right now, we focus on rebuilding.”

As Arav departed to relay the message, Maya leaned against the balcony railing, her brow furrowed in thought. “Do you think we truly banished her, Vikram? What if her spirit still roams these halls?”

Vikram stepped closer, wrapping his arms around her waist. “We did everything we could. Rajguru sacrificed himself for us. Rani’s spirit was released. We must trust that she is finally at peace.”
