"The emperor has been usurped by his favorite concubine?" Xu Zhen was slightly taken aback.
The female general nodded and, after regaining her composure, shared two more pieces of news: Firstly, reinforcements from Chang'an would definitely not be arriving. Secondly, the world was descending into chaos; although this hadn't yet reached the ears of the common people or the Hu people, it wouldn't be long before it did. If the Hu people found out, they would surely seize this opportunity to create trouble.
The concubine's power grab was indeed unexpected for Xu Zhen. Over the past year, she had been carefully setting her plans, repeatedly revisiting her memories, yet she had never anticipated this turn of events.
After the female general left, Xu Zhen leaned against the bed, reflecting on the contents of the book. She carefully considered the protagonist's ten reincarnations and finally recalled the relevant details from one of those lives.
In one of her earlier lives, the protagonist had not yet figured out how to tame the main antagonist. To establish her prestige, she had done many things beyond preventing a flood, though with limited success. Later, when the concubine charmed the court and disrupted governance, the protagonist faced internal chaos and external threats from a watchful antagonist at the border. She decided to join forces with the concubine to defeat Xun Qianchun. Ultimately, they failed, and the protagonist soon experienced another reincarnation. The book didn't elaborate much on the concubine's fate.
These events were briefly mentioned in the book, so it was understandable that Xu Zhen didn't remember them after so long. The concubine's current actions made Xu Zhen wonder if the protagonist had already been reborn.
But that didn't seem right.
If she had been reborn, why hadn't she come to assassinate Xun Qianchun? Currently, Xun Qianchun was not a major antagonist, just an ordinary person.
With this in mind, Xu Zhen turned to Xun Qianchun and asked, "Have any strangers come looking for you recently?"
Xun Qianchun set down the small sword in her hand and replied, "No."
Xu Zhen continued, "Any other strange occurrences?"
Xun Qianchun paused to think and then shook her head, "No."
"Ah," Xu Zhen sighed in relief, "That's good."
Xun Qianchun walked over to her side.
Xu Zhen then began to express concern about other matters: "What do you think will happen to the students in Chang'an? They've only just found their footing and haven't had the chance to fulfill their ambitions before facing this chaos."
Xun Qianchun reassured her, "They'll be fine."
Xun Qianchun reassured her, "They'll be fine."
Xu Zhen shifted the conversation, admitting, "I actually foresaw this day coming, yet I insisted on sending them to Chang'an to build their influence for the future. Do you think I'm being a bit wicked?"
Xun Qianchun replied, "Whatever you do, it's always with the best intentions."
Xu Zhen reflected, "I've made too many mistakes. Now, with the chaos in Chang'an, attacking the grasslands seems out of the question. Holding our position here would be an achievement. What do you think we should do now?"
Xun Qianchun changed from her military uniform into casual attire, a white linen robe draped loosely by the bed.
Leaning beside Xu Zhen, she suggested, "Wait for the right moment."
Xu Zhen remarked, "That is indeed the best approach, though I find it too slow."
Xun Qianchun inquired, "What do you have in mind?"
