Chapter 1: The Wish I Made

Mira

I made one wish on my 18th birthday: "I wish for my soulmate to find me." And what did I get? A damn cat. A familiar! But not just any cat—this one's black with red eyes. Like, what? I don't understand; he's not a normal cat at all, and he's so nasty! ALL. THE. TIME.

I shook my head, trying to wrap my mind around my new feline roommate. I'd never had any pets before, let alone a familiar—something every witch has! But I'm not just any witch. No, I'm half witch, half human. And that makes me rare.

We don't see many of our kind, and I'm not sure why. Anyway, my parents—Lilith and Miles—were one of a kind, too, So I heard from the witch community. My mom was the witch, and my dad was the human.

They died together... my father trying to save my mother from a spell she cast to protect me as I grew up, knowing I was half-human. It worked, but something went wrong, and he ended up dying alongside her. I was just a baby when it happened, so I heard the story from "Witch Foster Care" in a small town called Witch's Hollow (I know, very cliché). But that's where I've been since I was little.

Now I'm 18 years old, living in a penthouse in New York City... alone. Well, except for the cat that showed up at my door in the rain right after I blew out the candle on my mini birthday cake, a few days ago. I heard a knock—a magic knock, like a bell.

That's how familiars are supposed to arrive. Mine came to me. It's kind of interesting. The witches from my old town would have been proud, probably completely shocked, too.

I didn't blame them. I was the half-witch. No one wanted me, and I didn't blame any witch family for that. So here I am, alone, with no siblings and my parents gone, just me and my nightmare of a cat, who I'm still trying to figure out a name for, or at least for him to tell me his name would be amazing! Sometimes, when I go to bed at night and he's out in the living room, I can feel him snuggling against my feet. He may not like me, but he sure loves my feet!

What an interesting cat. With red eyes. So weird but also beautiful.
In the mornings, it was quite simple: I'd wake up to find the black cat with red eyes lounging on my gray couch.

You're probably wondering how someone like me could afford a penthouse. Well, when I turned 17, I finally received the money my parents left me in their will—money I wasn't supposed to access until I turned 18. But here's the thing: the witches back home gave it to me early. They were eager for me to leave town, especially since I was only half-witch. That's how I got my inheritance at 17.

Let's just say spells can yield a significant fortune. My parents were among the wealthiest in the community, but I knew they weren't the only ones using magic to navigate this world. We were all just trying to survive.
