In the hot summer of 1699 , in the Kingdom of France , in the village of La Chapelle-Thémer lived Marie-Jeanne Campion , daughter of Philippe Campion and Marie Campion . Marie-Jeanne was known for her beauty , her gentle nature and also her liveliness , much to the pride of her farm-owning family . One day , her mother put her in charge of washing clothes with her two sisters , Louise and Marguerite . As the three sisters washed garment after garment , a celestial being looked down from the world of the gods , King Zeus , and set his eyes on the beautiful Marie-Jeanne . For some time now , the celestial king has been lusting after the young woman . When the Campion sisters had finished washing their clothes , the younger sisters returned home , while Marie-Jeanne found herself alone picking flowers in the fields , and Zeus wanted to take advantage . He descended to Earth and metamorphosed into a tall , handsome young man . He took on this appearance to approach and seduce the young mouselet , who fell under his spell from the first moment she met him . A love story was born , Marie-Jeanne had a wonderful year full of happiness and romance , but...as with every great love story , there is always an end . From this union was born on December 19th , 1700 a little boy whom Marie-Jeanne named Zephir . After the child's birth , the father mysteriously disappeared and poor Marie-Jeanne was left heartbroken . Worse still , she found herself with a baby in her arms who had been conceived out of wedlock , a very bad idea at the time . Rumors spread through the village that the young mother had been seduced by the Devil himself and given a child . On learning of the child's existence , Philippe was beside himself , especially as his reputation had been reduced . To restore his name , the father expelled his own daughter and her child . Saddened and betrayed , Marie-Jeanne fled La Chapelle-Thémer with little Zephir . Everywhere she went , the young woman was subjected to judgments ; these daily , unsupportive judgments ended up driving the young mother to hate her own child , whom she believed to be responsible for her misfortunes , and she also hate the gods for not being able to answer her prayers .
