I was in my office, reviewing some documents with Marco, when my phone buzzed for the hundredth time. I ignored it at first, but it wouldn’t stop. Finally, I picked it up, and my lips curled into a smile. It was transaction notifications from the black card I’d given Elena long ago. She had never used it—until today. The thought of her shopping out of frustration made me chuckle. My cute, angry tesoro.

She was buying everything in sight, even things she didn’t need. Dresses, shoes, handbags, and… baby items? That surprised me. She’d spent nearly half of her shopping spree on baby products. My chest swelled with warmth knowing she was enjoying herself, even if it was with a hint of anger. At least she was safe. I closed my phone, feeling calmer, and turned my attention back to work.

But that calm was short-lived. Robert, one of the men I had stationed to protect Elena, called. The second I picked up, his voice was tense, frantic.

“Sir, they got attacked. We handled it at the mall, but they’re still being pursued.”

The blood drained from my face. My heartbeat thundered in my ears as I stood abruptly, the chair skidding back.

“They got attacked, Marco,” I barked, rushing toward the door. Marco's voice faded into the background as I bolted to my car.

I sped through the streets, my mind racing, adrenaline pumping. Then, I saw them—a familiar car ahead. It was Sophie’s, with Elena inside, and just behind them was the threat, the bastards still pursuing them.

I gritted my teeth, slammed on the brakes, and swerved my car in front of theirs. The tires screeched as I cut them off, leaving no escape route for them. My blood boiled as I stepped out, gun already in hand, and without hesitation, I fired. One. Two. Three shots. The men dropped dead before they could even comprehend what was happening.

I sprinted toward Sophie’s car, yanking open Elena’s door. The fear in her eyes tore at me, but I pulled her out and wrapped my arms around her, holding her tightly.

“Are you okay, tesoro?” I whispered, my voice shaking slightly as I felt her heartbeat against mine.

“Yes, Enzo. I’m okay,” she whispered back, her voice soft yet steady.

“Get in the car and go home,” I said firmly, looking into her eyes. “I’ll be there soon.”

I watched as Sophie’s car disappeared down the street, carrying Elena away to safety. My chest felt tight, the weight of what had just happened still pressing on me. I stood there for a moment, trying to ground myself. Reaching into my jacket pocket, I pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and leaned against the car. The smoke curled into the  air, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside me.
