Heading south, the closest place to Chang'an is the Li family in Huainan, which was exactly where Xu Zhen was headed.
At this moment, the sky was dark and gloomy. In Huainan City, the white mourning flags had yet to be taken down, and strips of cloth hung at the entrance of the city gate made of old mud walls, swaying gently in the wind. Two guards stood leaning against the wall at the gate, their expressions solemn, with white bands tied around their foreheads, their tear-streaked faces worn by the wind.
The defeat had a tremendous impact on the Li family.
Xu Zhen couldn't help but lament the unpredictability of life, impossible to gauge. She dismounted her horse, showed her identification, and quickly entered the city of Huainan.
The city was equally desolate, with scraps of paper and fallen leaves scattered on the ground, blowing around before settling back down.
Additionally, there were many military officers who had come to pay their respects, weathered and worn, standing by the roadside speaking softly.
They spoke of the care Li Taiwei had once shown them and of the unreliability of the young master, feeling that the Li family's fortune had run out.
Xu Zhen listened in on the conversation for a bit, then continued to walk slowly, observing her surroundings.
The area was very quiet, with the sound of the wind rustling and only the mournful cries of the people continuously reaching Xu Zhen's ears.
She didn't pay much attention to these people; she had other matters to attend to and understood clearly what she needed to do at this moment.
Little Beggar was attacking Chang'an to rescue the favored concubine Lan Yi, but in reality, this war had long spiraled out of control. Xu Zhen knew that Little Beggar wanted to end it all as well.
This war would be the last battle.
The war between the Northern Army and Chang'an was inevitable and would surely become a prolonged stalemate.
If she could gather some reinforcements, that would be ideal.
Xu Zhen sighed.
The city's mournful song had not yet ended, accompanied by the cries of birds and tears-a truly dreadful atmosphere.
Walking alone down the street, Xu Zhen was suddenly called from behind.
"Mr. Xu?" an energetic female voice called out to her.
Xu Zhen was taken aback, unable to believe someone in Huainan recognized her, and the voice was familiar, as though she had heard it somewhere before.
Turning around, she saw a young woman dressed in gray linen clothing. The sleeves were frayed, with two small flowers embroidered at the collar, a headscarf on her head, and a faint smile on her face, looking very graceful. Xu Zhen recognized her attire and face.
If she remembered correctly, this person was the lawyer she had met in Chang'an.
But why was she here?
Xu Zhen couldn't figure it out.
She stared at the woman for a moment and directly asked, "Do you also know Li Taiwei of the Li family?"
The lawyer smiled without answering directly and instead invited Xu Zhen into a restaurant where they found a corner to sit.
There weren't many people in the restaurant, as many townsfolk had gone to Green Mountain to kneel in gratitude for the stable life Li Taiwei had provided them and were beginning to worry about constant warfare in Huainan.
