Andrés hung precariously from the edge of the rooftop, the soles of his shoes scraping against the smooth metal of the drainpipe. His arms were stretched out, fingers desperately clutching the ledge as he tried to pull himself up. Below, the dizzying height made his heart pound in his chest, but a wild grin spread across his face."Need a hand, Andy?" Theo called up from the ground, one hand on his hip, the other shielding his eyes from the sun as he squinted up at him. His voice was tinged with that familiar exasperation, the kind that always came right before he had to save his ass.
"Theo, please," Andrés huffed, still grinning. "I got this."
"Yeah, you've got it alright," Icarus chimed in from where they stood beside Theo, nose buried in a thick book that looked far too heavy to be practical. "Right up until you break your neck."
"I'm telling you," Andrés managed, his arms trembling with the effort, "this is all part of my plan."
August, standing up on the rooftop, stifled a laugh. His usual quiet demeanor faded around Andrés, and there was a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Think we should just let him dangle there for a bit?" he called down to Theo.
Theo rolled his eyes, but there was a fondness in his expression that softened the gesture. "I swear, one day you're going to get yourself killed, and then what am I supposed to do?"
"Throw a party?" Icarus suggested dryly, not looking up from their book.
"Funny," Andrés shot back, finally managing to swing a leg up and over the edge. With a final, dramatic grunt, he pulled himself onto the rooftop and lay there, panting, his limbs splayed out as if he were making a snow angel on the asphalt.
"Nice save," August said, stepping closer and offering a hand to pull Andrés up. "Not that I didn't have full confidence in you."
"Of course you did, Auggie," Andrés replied, taking the hand and bouncing back onto his feet with renewed energy. "You're my biggest fan."
"Your only fan," Icarus muttered under their breath, but Andrés heard them anyway.
"Hey! I resent that. I've got plenty of fans. Right, Theo?"
"Uh-huh," Theo replied, not even bothering to hide his smirk as he crossed his arms over his chest. "You and your imaginary fan club."
Andrés grinned at them, eyes bright with mischief. "You're just jealous you're not president of the club."
"I'm the president, but you can be the custodian!" August giggled, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Speaking of custodians," Theo said, suddenly all business, "how exactly do you plan on getting down from there? Because I'm not calling the fire department again."
"Already thought of that, Theo," Andrés said with a wink, turning to the fire escape ladder conveniently attached to the side of the building. He swung a leg over the edge and began descending, all too casually for someone who had just been hanging by his fingertips.
As soon as his feet touched the ground, Theo was there, fussing over him as he always did. He checked him for any sign of injury, muttering under his breath about how he could have broken something important, like his head.
Andrés waved them off with a laugh. "Come on, Thee-Thee. You know I'm indestructible."
"You're an idiot," he corrected, but the fondness in his voice betrayed him.
