A week had passed since Alex and Maya had shared their second coffee date, and each day had brought with it a new wave of anticipation. Alex found himself looking forward to his mornings with an eagerness he hadn't felt in ages. They texted often, sharing memes, little updates about their days, and playful banter that felt natural and effortless.
One sunny Saturday morning, Alex decided to take a break from the routine of work and meet Maya for a late brunch. He arrived at their agreed-upon café—an eclectic little place Maya had raved about, complete with quirky décor and an impressive brunch menu. As he stepped inside, the rich aroma of freshly baked pastries enveloped him, instantly putting him in a good mood.
Maya was already there, sitting at a table near the window, her guitar case propped up beside her. She was absorbed in a notebook, scribbling down lyrics or perhaps doodling; he couldn't quite tell from where he stood.
"Hey there, creative genius!" he called, waving as he approached.
Maya looked up, her face lighting up with a smile. "Alex! Perfect timing! I was just trying to think of a title for a new song."
"Need any help? I'm pretty sure I'm an expert in wordsmithing," he teased, pulling out the chair across from her.
"Oh, absolutely," she said, rolling her eyes playfully. "Because 'Spilled Lattes and Second Chances' is totally on brand for a ballad about heartbreak."
Alex laughed, leaning forward with interest. "Actually, that sounds like a catchy title! But I suppose it depends on the mood of the song."
"True. This one's more of a lighthearted tune," Maya replied, tapping her pen against her chin. "I was thinking something along the lines of 'Dancing in the Rain'—not too original, but it fits."
"I like it!" he encouraged. "It's got a nice ring to it. Besides, who doesn't love a good rainy-day song?"
"Exactly!" Maya said, looking pleased. She quickly jotted down the title before glancing at the menu. "So, what are you going to have? The pancakes here are to die for."
"I was thinking of the eggs Benedict, but now you've got me reconsidering," Alex said, eyeing the menu again.
After they placed their orders, the conversation flowed effortlessly, shifting from music to their favourite movies, then to their childhood memories. Each moment spent together felt increasingly comfortable, like they were finally discovering pieces of each other's lives.
As they finished their brunch, Maya leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful expression on her face. "So, Alex, what's the craziest thing you've ever done?"
He leaned in, feigning a serious look. "Oh, I can't tell you everything on the first date. What if you decide I'm too wild and never want to see me again?"
Maya laughed, her eyes sparkling. "C'mon! Just a little hint?"
"Alright, fine," Alex conceded, sitting back with a smirk. "There was that time I accidentally went bungee jumping. Long story short, I was supposed to just watch my mates do it, but then I got roped into it last minute. Let's just say I screamed louder than the rest of them combined."
Maya's eyes widened in surprise. "Wow! I thought you were a marketing guy, not an adrenaline junkie!"
"I'm not usually. I prefer my thrills in more moderate doses—like meeting random people at coffee shops," he replied with a wink.
"You're living on the edge, then!" she teased. "I respect that."
They both laughed, but as their conversation continued, Maya felt a sudden flutter of nerves. She had been enjoying their lighthearted banter, but there was something she wanted to bring up—something that had been on her mind since they first met.
