"Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!"

Psalms 119:36

----------

The bustling streets of the city were alive with activity as Daniel walked through the marketplace. The sound of vendors calling out to passersby, the smell of freshly baked bread, and the clatter of coins filled the air. It was a place of opportunity, where anyone with enough drive and ambition could make something of themselves.

Daniel had spent years working his way up in the business world, and now he was on the brink of something big. He had landed a meeting with a wealthy investor, someone who could take his small company and turn it into a major success. But as he hurried through the market toward the office building, a thought tugged at the back of his mind—a thought he had been trying to push away for days.

Two weeks ago, his old friend Tom had called him. Tom ran a struggling charity that helped families in need, and they were desperate for donations. He had asked Daniel for support, knowing that he had the resources to help. But Daniel had brushed him off, too focused on the upcoming deal and his own business goals.

Now, as Daniel walked, the memory of that conversation weighed on him. He had told Tom he would "think about it," but he hadn't done anything. His heart had been too wrapped up in the excitement of his potential success.

Daniel shook his head, trying to clear his mind. He couldn't afford to be distracted now, not with everything at stake. But as he neared the entrance to the office, a verse from the Bible he had read earlier that week surfaced in his thoughts: Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain.

He stopped in his tracks, the words echoing in his mind. Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain. The verse seemed to speak directly to his situation. He had been so focused on this deal, on what he could achieve for himself, that he hadn't paused to consider what mattered.

"Hey, Daniel!" A voice called out, breaking his train of thought. He turned to see Tom walking toward him, a look of surprise on his face. "I didn't expect to see you here!"

Daniel forced a smile. "Tom, hey. What are you doing here?"

Tom gestured to the street behind him. "I was just meeting with some local businesses, trying to get some support for the charity. Things have been tough lately, but I'm doing what I can."

Daniel nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "Yeah, I remember you mentioned that."

Tom gave him a hopeful smile. "I know you're busy, but if you ever get a chance to help out, we'd appreciate it. Even a little bit goes a long way."

Daniel opened his mouth to respond, but he found himself hesitating. His heart was conflicted. He had the means to help, but his mind kept going back to the meeting he was about to have—the opportunity for his business to grow.

"Tom, I..." Daniel started, but his words trailed off as the verse echoed again in his thoughts: "Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain."

For a moment, he stood there, caught between two desires. One path led to personal success and the pursuit of wealth. The other called him to something deeper, something more aligned with the heart of God. The choice wasn't just about money—it was about where his heart was inclined.

Tom seemed to sense Daniel's hesitation and gave him an understanding smile. "No pressure, Daniel. I know you've got a lot going on. Just... keep us in mind."

Daniel watched as Tom started to walk away, but something inside him stirred. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was being given a choice, right here, right now.

"Wait," Daniel called out, causing Tom to turn back. "About the charity... how much do you need?"

Tom blinked, surprised. "Well, we're behind on our goal for the month. Even a few hundred dollars would make a big difference."

Daniel took a deep breath. "What if I covered the whole month's goal?"

Tom's eyes widened. "Are you serious? Daniel, that would be... that would be amazing! You don't have to—"

"I want to," Daniel said, his voice firm. "I've been thinking a lot lately about what matters. I've been too focused on my success, but I think it's time I started helping others, too."

Tom's face lit up with gratitude. "Daniel, I can't thank you enough. This is going to help so many families. You're making a real difference."

As they exchanged a few more words and said their goodbyes, Daniel felt a strange sense of peace wash over him. He had been so caught up in his ambition, in chasing after material gain, that he had forgotten the importance of selflessness. But in this moment, he had chosen to incline his heart toward something greater—toward serving others.

He turned and walked away from the office building, the deal he had been chasing now far from his mind. It wasn't that he was giving up on his business, but he realized that success meant nothing if his heart wasn't in the right place.

The rain began to fall lightly as Daniel made his way back through the marketplace, but for the first time in a long while, he felt a sense of clarity. His heart was no longer torn between selfish gain and doing what was right. He had made his choice.

dghlmnrt: It's easy to become consumed with our desires, ambitions, and goals, especially in a world that encourages us to seek personal gain. But God's word calls us to something greater. It invites us to shift our focus away from selfish pursuits and toward selflessness, generosity, and service to others.

Practice selflessness. Look for opportunities to serve others, even when it's not convenient or beneficial to you. God's testimony—His teachings—are about love, kindness, and compassion. When we align our hearts with these values, we reflect God's character and make a lasting impact on those around us.

As you go about your daily life, ask yourself, Where is your heart inclined? Are you more focused on selfish gain, or are you seeking ways to serve and love others? Choose the path that aligns with God's heart, and you will find true fulfillment.
