Chapter Fourty
Remedy"You're up early," Maggie remarked upon entering the kitchen. Her hair was still wet from the shower, dripping onto her shirt at her shoulders.
Alyssa placed a plate with oat pancakes stacked as high as she could manage without them toppling over in the middle of the dining table. She'd decked the table with two plates, two sets of cutlery, and two mugs.
After her talk with Michonne, she decided that she should throw herself back into a routine. Something to keep her busy. And she thought part of that should be doing things together. She had isolated herself long enough and now was the time to be a team player. Well, after this morning.
"I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep," Alyssa explained. She grabbed the kettle from the stove and poured boiling water into the two mugs, then placed a box of teabags in between them. She put the kettle back and grabbed her bag off the counter. "I already ate, but I thought you and Glenn could have breakfast together before your shift."
Maggie looked at the stack of pancakes and gave her a doubtful look. "All that for two of us?" she questioned.
"Baby needs to eat," Alyssa explained sheepishly, shrugging.
"I'm not growing a bear," Maggie countered playfully.
Alyssa smiled. "Fine. I'll bring some over to the guard post after I check up on Eugene," she decided. She grabbed a dish to put the pancakes in and two forks to eat them with. She closed the container and put it in her bag.
"You're not going to give some to Eugene?" Glenn wondered, having come just come down the stairs.
Alyssa shook her head. "I have an iron-rich breakfast for him to stimulate the production of red blood cells," she responded. "Anyway, I should head off; much to do. I'll see you tonight for dinner."
Glenn caught her on her way out by her elbow. "Hey," he forced her to look at him, "thank you."
Alyssa smiled. "It's no problem. Now go eat before it gets cold," she told them as she walked toward the door.
"We're proud of you, you know that, right?" Glenn called to her as he sat down.
Alyssa's smile grew, but she gave no verbal response. She exited the house and walked over to the aid station. She pushed open the door and closed it behind her as she entered. She placed her bag down on the counter and started unpacking some items. "Good morning. I brought you some breakfast and a change of clothes, for when you feel up to it," she explained as she stacked them on the counter, along with a glass jar filled with a yellow vaseline-like substance. "So how are you feeling?"
"I must say, I am enjoying the effects of the hydrocodone, but not so much the drowsiness," Eugene responded, attempting to sit up in the bed. "This is not a brain you want to numb."
