Chiang Rai Province, 1992

"Mai Seek, you go lure that black animal from the forest over there" Mai Seek moved his chubby body with the life preserver around his waist as his boss ordered, not wanting to lose, but he still turned to speak in a soft voice.

"Is it okay, Phi Tai? Ai Dam is quite fierce." Ai Dam is a plump wild boar that went on a rampage and ate the villagers' vegetables and crops, causing damage to them, causing trouble for everyone.

(A/N: Phi means older brother or sister)

“What are you afraid of? It’s just a pig. How big can it be?”

A muscular wild boar weighing no less than thirty kilograms. Importantly, its tusks are long and curved. It has bitten many villagers until its tusks were sunken in. Normally, wild boars live in herds, but this one is the fiercest, so it was separated from the others.

“But it is big and has big fangs.”

"No matter how big it is, it'll still be smaller than you. Are you going to argue?" Tai shouted, hands on her hips, looking at the other.

"Can I have Samlee go instead, Phi Thai?" Mai Siek negotiated. The other partner, Samlee, whose eyes widened, quickly waved his hand and shook his head. He had dark skin, almost black, so only his eyes could be seen. Only when he smiled would his teeth be seen, his white, neat rows. When he realized that he was in danger, he quickly gave a hint to his friend.

"You go away. You're fat too. The pigs will get confused."

"You should do it, Samlee. The pigs can't see anything black like you. I've heard that the wild boar's eyes are bad. If you just stand still, it won't bite you."

Wild boars have a very good sense of smell, but their eyes and ears are not very good. Humans use this advantage to capture them. The boss turned to Samlee and pointed.

“Then let Samlee do it instead.”

Samli stood with his hands together, his legs shaking, and bowed to his elder brother in a strange manner.

“I can’t do it, Phi Thai. My legs and arms aren’t very good. Just standing makes me shake, so how can I lure pigs? You go, Mai Seek. You’re fat and strong.”

"You should do it. You're thin and can run fast. You won't get gored by pigs," Mai Seek said, pointing at Samlee.

"It's a pig, not a buffalo," Samlee shouted.

“Then go yourself. Pigs don’t gore. They just bite and tear the flesh apart. I’ve seen it many times. The pig bites until the wound is deep.”

"You should do it."

Many villagers have been attacked by this wild boar because of its fierceness. It is so large and fast that no one can catch it. The two of them kept pointing their fingers at each other until the older brother got her sleeve hit.

“Enough, you two are really cowards. This is not good. Do you want me to go myself? In that case, we don’t have to be cousins anymore.”

Even though they’re scared about the task, they're more afraid of their boss. The two subordinates therefore agreed to follow her.

“Oh, Phi Tai, don’t say that. We’re all scared. Samlee just wants to argue.“

“Choose who will go.”

"Let's play rock, paper, scissors, so that it's fair," Samlee suggested. The two young men clasped their hands above their heads and asked the gods to save them from danger.

This time Tai counted one, two, three, and then they played rock, paper, scissors. Their boss acted as the referee. The two closed their eyes before each making a sign and then slowly squinted. Samlee used paper, but the other used scissors.
