Months passed within the walls of the Rose Wall, and Marie's daily routine at Dr. Krauss's clinic became more familiar. Every day, she made her way to the small cobbled street, often braving rain or cold wind, determined to learn all she could. Dr. Krauss, though gruff and conservative, was beginning to appreciate her perseverance and enthusiasm. He sometimes allowed her to observe more complex consultations, and she was even starting to get used to the sight of blood and injuries.
Meanwhile, her relationship with the doctor's daughter, Sarah, was also developing. Sarah often came to help at the clinic, though her tasks were mostly limited to cleaning and organizing supplies, except for occasional opportunities to assist her father. She was a lively and curious young woman, with a somewhat audacious sense of humor and a tendency to ask embarrassing questions. She seemed particularly interested in Marie, perhaps because she was the sister of Erwin Smith, the famous major.
That day, Sarah and Marie were working together in the supply room, organizing jars of dried herbs and vials of potions. The light filtering through the small window created a gentle atmosphere, though the smell of medicinal herbs and tinctures was a bit suffocating. The shelves were filled with vials, dusty books, and strange instruments, and the two young women chatted as they worked.
"So," Sarah began with a mischievous smile, wiping a glass vial with a cloth, "How's it going with old Krauss? He's not being too hard on you, is he?"
Marie shrugged, a slight smile on her lips. "Oh, he's... gruff, but I think he likes me now. He even lets me do some more interesting things."
Sarah chuckled lightly, a joyful sound that echoed in the small room. "Ah, yes, that's the doctor for you. If he's giving you more work, it means he likes you." She put the vial back on the shelf and turned to Marie, a sparkle of mischief in her eyes. "And what about your brother, the great Major Erwin Smith? He picks you up every day, doesn't he?"
Marie blushed slightly, surprised by the question. "Yes, well, when he's not busy with his duties as a major. Hanji comes sometimes instead."
Sarah nodded, a smile forming on her lips. "You know," she began, her tone becoming more suggestive, "your brother is very... attractive."
Marie blinked, not expecting that kind of comment. "Oh... um, thank you, I guess?" she replied, a little confused.
Sarah laughed softly, a laugh that contained a hint of mystery. "Oh, don't be so shy, Marie. There's nothing wrong with saying a man is handsome. And your brother, with his stature and that intense gaze..." She bit her lower lip, unintentionally mimicking the gesture she had made when she first met Erwin.
Marie, still a bit naive on such topics, couldn't help but feel embarrassed. "I... I suppose so. But he is my brother, after all..."
Sarah smiled, noticing Marie's discomfort. She moved a little closer, her eyes gleaming with almost mischievous curiosity. "Tell me, Marie, have you ever been in love?"
Marie shook her head, her cheeks flushing slightly. "No... well, I don't think so. I'm not sure I really know what it is..."
Sarah laughed softly, clearly amused. "Oh, it's simple. When you see someone and your heart beats faster, when you can't help but think about them..."
Marie frowned, thinking. "I don't know..." she murmured. "I don't think I've ever felt that for anyone."
Sarah shrugged, still smiling. "It will come." She paused for a moment, a more serious expression appearing on her face. "And... you know, there's more than just feelings when it comes to love."
Marie looked at her, intrigued. "What do you mean?"
Sarah leaned a bit closer, lowering her voice as if sharing a secret. "Well... there are also physical pleasures."
