CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
Rafe
Nassau, Bahamas
Dad and I arrived at the house in Nassau and I almost forgot how much I always love coming to this house. The sounds of the ocean and the wildlife with the occasional sound of the ship horns echoing from the marina.
The sun beats hotter down here causing sweat to pool under my cap and drip slowly down my spine. No one's been in the house, meaning- there's no air conditioning on at the moment. But once I step onto the balcony and feel that sea breeze I feel a sense of home.
I check my phone to see if I have any texts from Alana but the signal is spotty here. She didn't come with us to Nassau. She had a hard time sleeping last night and had to be up pretty early anyways for a meeting with her online advisor. When the meeting started running later than expected she just wanted us to leave without her. I'd never seen her so exhausted before and then she decided to pick up some extra hours by running errands for Rose.
"Rafe, come check it out." Dad says as he opens the safe revealing all the gold that had once been hidden for hundreds of years. Gold that survived a ship wreck and a plane ride down here as well.
All the gold that now belongs to my family. All the gold that one day will be my fortune that I'll inherit from my dad. All the gold that I'll pass to my future children and so on and so forth. It brings a newfound brightness to my life that I never thought I'd find.
I just wish Alana was here to see it with her own eyes.
"Rafe I know I'm hard on you. But thanks to you this gold is here. That day on the tarmac... This gold wouldn't have made it to Nassau to be put in this safe if you hadn't come. If you hadn't saved me.. By saving me you saved our family for generations to come. You understand that right? Your kids, your grandkids, your great grandkids- all the way down the line they will be set for life because of you."
Because of me... Because I protected this family and I.. I did something horrible that I can't change. It lead to more horrible things. Awful things that still haunt my dreams and I know that I'll only be here two more nights but I don't know if I'll be able to even sleep. Closing my eyes and not having the one thing that reminds me to breathe. The one thing that reminds me to stay where I am and not go off the rails again?
How can I sleep without the woman I love.
"How much is all that even worth?" Is the only thing I can process to let fall from my tongue. "How much are we looking at?"
"Half a bill." Dad says with a smile. "Sound like enough or?"
I blow out a whistle with my breath. "That's... Holy fuck."
"You and Wheezie are set for life. Don't blow it."
"I won't-"
"Rafe." Dad says firmly. "I'm being serious. You don't have a good track record with money at all. You blow it on bikes and drugs and I don't even want to know what else you buy. I'd rather not ever know but this money... You cannot blow it. Sure, spoil yourself. Get a nice car and buy a nice house and a boat and take care of your future family. But don't just blow it to blow it."
"Dad, I'm clean. I haven't done drugs in a few weeks. Not since like... I don't know maybe right after the Peterkin thing?"
He nods. "You're truly sober?"
"I mean I still drink-"
"You need to cool it with that. You're too young to be wrecking your liver the way you do. A drink once in a while is fine but Rafe, you don't know your limits. You're just like I was at that age and I wish I wasn't."
