Title: The Day Xander Almost Died
The sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm glow over the Brock household. It was a typical day, but for Xander, it would soon become anything but ordinary. He had been feeling off for the past few days—tired, a little dizzy, but he brushed it off as residual weakness from his time in the hospital. After months of treatment, he was eager to rejoin the world and be the brother and son he wanted to be.
On this particular day, Xavier had invited a few friends over for a playdate. The sounds of laughter and excitement filled the house, and Xander felt a rush of energy at the thought of joining in. However, as the afternoon wore on, he found himself sitting on the couch, watching the kids play tag in the backyard, his head spinning. He decided to push through, wanting to be part of the fun, but the dizzy spells were becoming more frequent.
"Hey, Xander! Come play!" Xavier called, running up to him, a bright smile on his face.
Xander smiled back but shook his head. "I think I'll just watch for a bit," he replied, trying to sound cheerful despite the heaviness settling in his chest.
"Okay! But you're missing out!" Xavier said, darting back outside.
As the games continued, Xander's condition worsened. He felt an overwhelming wave of nausea and the room began to spin. The laughter outside faded into a distant echo as he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to steady himself. Panic surged through him. He struggled to breathe, feeling as if an invisible weight was pressing down on his chest.
"Xander?" A voice pulled him from the fog. He opened his eyes to find Sam kneeling beside him, concern etched across his face. "You okay, buddy?"
"I... I don't feel good," Xander gasped, clutching his chest. "I think I need to lie down."
Before he could stand, darkness swirled around him. He felt light-headed and weak, and suddenly everything went black.
When Xander came to, he was lying on the living room floor, his heart racing. Panic gripped him, and he tried to push himself up, but his body felt heavy. The world around him was blurry, and shadows danced at the edges of his vision.
"Xander! Oh my God!" Valerie's voice pierced through the haze as she rushed into the room, panic evident in her eyes. "What happened? Xander!"
He tried to respond, but his throat felt tight. He could hear the commotion of voices around him—Xavier crying, Sam shouting for help, and Katrina trying to keep the other kids calm. The noise was overwhelming, and he felt a rush of fear wash over him.
"Stay with me, Xander! Just breathe," Valerie said, kneeling beside him, her hand on his forehead. Her touch was cool and soothing, but he could see the worry etched in her features. "Help is on the way."
"Mom... I can't breathe," he managed to whisper, his voice barely audible.
"Just focus on me, Xander. You're going to be okay. You're not alone. I'm right here," she said, her voice steady, but he could hear the tremor beneath it.
Moments felt like hours as they waited. The sound of sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as they approached. When the paramedics finally arrived, they rushed into the house, taking charge of the situation. Xander felt hands on him, gentle yet firm, as they checked his vitals and prepared to transport him.
"Xander, can you hear me?" one of the paramedics asked, looking directly into his eyes.
He nodded weakly, feeling fear twist in his stomach. "I'm scared," he admitted, tears pooling in his eyes.
"It's okay to be scared," the paramedic replied calmly. "We're going to take care of you. Just keep breathing. You're going to be alright."
With a flurry of activity, they lifted him onto a stretcher, and he felt a rush of fresh air as they wheeled him outside. The bright sunlight felt overwhelming against his skin, but he kept his focus on the familiar faces around him—Valerie, Sam, Xavier, and Katrina—all of them watching with worry and love.
As they loaded him into the ambulance, Valerie squeezed his hand tightly. "I'm right here, Xander. I won't leave you."
The ride to the hospital was a blur of sirens and bright lights, and Xander felt himself slipping in and out of consciousness. It felt as though time stretched endlessly, each moment punctuated by the frantic rhythm of his heart.
Once they arrived at the hospital, Xander was whisked away into a room filled with doctors and nurses, their voices a flurry of medical jargon that he couldn't quite understand. The chaos felt surreal, like a dream he couldn't wake up from.
"Xander, we need to do some tests," one of the doctors said gently, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "You're going to feel a little pinch, but we're here to help you."
As the needles and machines surrounded him, Xander felt fear creeping back in. He closed his eyes tightly, willing himself to be brave. He thought of his family, of Xavier, and of all the moments they had shared. He didn't want to leave them.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the doctor returned with news. "Xander, you had a severe asthma attack caused by an infection. But you're stable now, and we're going to keep you here for observation."
The weight of relief flooded over him. "I... I'm going to be okay?" he asked weakly.
"Yes," the doctor assured him with a warm smile. "With proper treatment, you'll be back home soon."
As the night wore on, Xander found himself lying in a hospital bed, feeling the weight of everything that had happened. He was exhausted but grateful. He had come close to something he couldn't fully understand, but he felt the strength of his family surrounding him, ready to lift him up.
When Valerie finally entered the room later, her eyes were puffy from crying, but relief washed over her face as she saw him awake. "You scared me, Xander," she said, sitting beside him and taking his hand. "I thought I was going to lose you."
"I'm sorry, Mom," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "I didn't mean to scare you."
"It's okay," she replied, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "Just promise me you'll tell me if you're feeling unwell next time. You're not a burden; you're my son, and I need you to be safe."
Xander nodded, feeling the warmth of her words settle in his heart. "I promise."
As he closed his eyes, the hum of the hospital around him faded into a soothing lullaby. He realized that while that day had been terrifying, it had also shown him the depth of love and strength in his family. They would always be there for him, through the good and the bad, and he would face whatever challenges came next with them by his side.
