It was still early in the morning, and the first rays of sunlight glistened through the windows of the small café. Mikey, Draken, and Akira sat at their familiar table in the corner, each with a large milkshake in front of them. It was their favorite spot, a place that felt good, even as life outside grew more complicated.
Mikey sipped his vanilla milkshake and scrutinized his friends more closely. "You both look pretty beaten up." he remarked with a grin, raising an eyebrow. "Did I miss something?"
Akira and Draken exchanged a quick glance before turning away with restrained smiles. "Nothing major." murmured Akira, absentmindedly stirring her chocolate shake with a straw. "Just a few guys who got a little too loud."
Draken chuckled softly and pointed to a bruise on his arm. "A little fight, that’s all. We just had to show those guys that they messed with the wrong people."
Mikey’s smile widened. He knew that Draken and Akira had been getting into fights with other groups lately to prove themselves. They hardly included him anymore. Akira intentionally teamed up with Draken to gain experience and train harder without Mikey's superior strength. He could have quickly ended most of the fights, and that was exactly what they wanted to avoid.
"So, are you two just going out alone now without telling me?" Mikey shook his head playfully. "You know I’m always down for it."
Akira smirked briefly but averted her gaze, as if she had learned long ago that he wouldn’t understand their decision.
---
Akira sat unsuspectingly at the kitchen table, her school bag carelessly tossed into the corner, as her mother and father sat down across from her. The atmosphere was unusually serious, and a sense of unease rose within her.
"Akira, we need to tell you something important." her father began, throwing a nervous glance at her mother, who nodded silently. "My company has offered me a new position.. in Germany. We’re moving there."
The words hit her like a blow. "What?" She stared at her parents in disbelief. "To Germany? But that’s on the other side of the world! I can’t just.. leave everything behind here!"
"Aki babe, we know this is sudden" her mother said gently "but it’s a great opportunity for all of us. It will be exciting for you to experience a new country."
"But I don’t want to!" Her voice trembled. "My friends are here! Mikey, Draken, everyone! You can’t just take me away and expect everything to be okay!" Her hands clenched into fists as despair welled up inside her.
Her father sighed and tried to take her hand, but she pulled away. "We understand this is hard, but sometimes we have to make decisions that benefit everyone. In Germany, you’ll find new friends."
"New friends?" she shouted, upset. "You don’t understand anything! You’re just focused on yourselves and don't care about what’s important to me!" Tears welled in her eyes, but she didn’t want to give them the satisfaction of seeing her cry.
"Akira, this is final." her mother said, this time more sternly. "Nothing will change this."
With one last desperate glance, Akira stood up and ran out of the kitchen without looking back. Her parents’ words echoed in her head. She didn’t want to believe it, she couldn’t believe it.
In her room, she collapsed onto her bed and buried her face in her hands. The thoughts of Mikey and Draken pained her. How was she going to explain this to them? How could she say goodbye without showing how much it hurt?
She reached for a photo she kept on her nightstand, a picture of her and Mikey taken on a sunny day in the park. They were laughing as they wiped paint from a mishap, their clothes crumpled and their faces beaming with joy. Now that day seemed so far away, as if it belonged to another life.
"Mikey, Draken.. I’m so sorry." she whispered as the tears flowed uncontrollably. She knew that life would separate her from them, but she never imagined the goodbye would come so soon.
---
"Mikey" Akika say, her voice steady. "I’m leaving you." The silence that follows is thick and unbreakable.
His grin faded, confusion flickering in his eyes. For a moment, it seemed like he thought it was a joke, waiting for her to take it back and laugh.
But she didn’t.
"How.. do you mean that?" he finally asked, his voice barely more than a whisper. There was a tremor he tried to suppress, but Akira heard it, intensifying the pain within her.
She swallowed hard, holding his gaze. "I’m moving away. My family.. we’re leaving Japan. Tomorrow."
Her words hung in the air, he opened his mouth, closed it again, as if desperately searching for something, anything he could say. Finally, he simply stared at her, as if trying to memorize her face.
"Tomorrow.." he repeated quietly, and his voice broke just enough for her to hear. It struck her deeply, more than she wanted to show.
Without thinking, she reached out, briefly touching his hand, a touch that was almost too short. "I’m sorry, Mikey."
For a brief moment, he closed his fingers around hers, holding them tighter than she expected. But then, just as suddenly, he let go, his gaze hardening as if he couldn’t bear the truth.
