Introduction:

Hello. I see that you have stumbled upon my story, Broken but Not Defeated. You could have clicked on any other story, but yet here you are, sparing your precious time to read my folly. So, thank you.

Synopsis: 

Putting her through a hell that she mistook for love, Liliana is left broken by the very people meant to protect her: her mother and her stepfather. Their arrest and subsequent criminal charges leave them unable to continue to "care" for her. This series of unfortunate events leaves Liliana in a predicament that even her wildest dreams could not have prepared her for: moving to a foreign country and into the home of people she has never met. Now, the mute fifteen-year-old must summon all her courage to learn to navigate and survive an entirely new world that, even on the surface, seems far more dangerous than the one she'd left behind back in the States. All while adjusting to living with eight overbearing men who call themselves her family.

Inspiration:

Broken but Not Defeated is inspired by the hundreds of other Mafia/Found Daughter/Older Brother stories on Wattpad, so let it be said once and for all: this plot is neither original nor new. Despite the obvious overlapping plot shared by many Mafia stories and other overused elements, I try my hardest to put my own stamp on it, to make it unique in its own way. In doing so, I realize that Broken but Not Defeated may not be everyone's cup of tea. I understand and accept this to be a fact, and I ask that you move on to either read another story that tickles your fancy or encourage you to write your own Mafia story. Please let me know so I can read it! I am always looking for something new and excited to read.

This story is purely fictional and is not inspired by any particular person, place, or event. My intention is to entertain with this story, not to educate or influence the reader in any way. However, specific topics will be researched beforehand in an attempt to make them as "correct and/or authentic" as possible.

This story is for a mature audience only! This is not intended to be a warm, fuzzy, sweet, or lighthearted bedtime story.

As mentioned, the Mafia/Lost Daughter genre is not original or unique to Broken but Not Defeated, and therefore, I do not claim ownership of the plot. Yes, I am aware my characters' names are not unique to my story either; please do not accuse me of plagiarizing my story simply because my character's names and/or personalities match yours or another author's character. I apologize in advance for any and all likenesses you find throughout this book, but in the end, this is my brainchild.

There are only so many ways we can individually express all the Xanders of Wattpad without stepping on each other's toes.

I do not expect you, as the reader, to remember all the characters beyond the major ones as the story progresses, so for the first several chapters, I will include a list of all characters appearing in the chapter at the beginning with a brief description of each to try and help clear up any confusion. Google Translate makes all Italian (Russian, Irish, German, French, etc.) words, phrases, sentences, and/or conversations within this story possible. My linguistic capabilities begin and end with the English language. Since I rely on an artificial intelligence translator engine like Google, not all of my translations may be linguistically, structurally, or grammatically correct- please feel free to reach out with the correct phrase/spelling/word/etc. So that I can change it- I will not fact-check you; I will just blindly trust you to know what you are talking about. Anyway, for now, I plan on putting the intended English translation in () quotations either immediately behind the single word(s) or at the end of the phrase. As mentioned, this book is not for everyone; you either like it or don't. I write for myself and choose to share with you. If my version of events offends, upsets, or otherwise leaves you feeling dissatisfied, write your own story.

Religion will occasionally be brought up. I am not a Catholic and no nothing about Catholicism, but I will try to do my research before posting anything religious-based; I do not wish to offend anyone on this front.

There are a lot of mentions of violence within this book.

This book is intended for those readers who are 18+ years of age. If you are not yet 18, I cannot stop you from reading this, but in doing so, you are reading Broken but Not Defeated at your own risk.

All warnings are subject to change and vary over the course and progression of this book.

Stylistic Choices:

Each chapter will include a warning and example of the author's stylistic choices for that chapter. The main character is mute and will use multiple forms to communicate; each form will be stylized a little differently for the reader to differentiate the form from another. I will include stylistic choices at the beginning of each applicable chapter.

Update Schedule:

Like the rest of us, I have a life and will not set a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly posting/uploading commitment. I will update this story when I can, but I prefer quality over quantity, and I hope you will be able to see that in my future installments of this work.

Begging for an update will sadly not fuel my brain to produce story content faster, but it encourages me to continue writing, as it lets me know that I have not chased off all my readers yet.
