HOOKED (CHAPTER 13):
DISTRACTION

༻❁༺

"Hey..."

"Y/n..."

"Y/nnnn!"

"Earth to Y/N!" Tiffany nudges your arm, pulling you back from the depths of your drifting thoughts.

"H-Hm?"

She grimaces and subtly gestures towards the front of the classroom. That's when you notice everyone's eyes on you, making a chill creep up your spine.

'Did I really just zone out...' Your heart pounds with a dizzying intensity, and the annoyed look on your professor's face only worsens it.

You hadn't realized your professor had been calling your name - apparently more than three times - until Tiffany finally nudged you. You start to turn to her, ready to ask what's going on, when the professor clears her throat.

"Are you with us now, Miss L/n?" Her tone is sharp and cold, causing you to stammer.

"Y-Yes, Ma'am. I'm sorry, I didn't-"

"Stand up."

Your body reacts automatically, and you rise to your feet, panic buzzing so obviously that even Tiffany looks embarrassed on your behalf. The professor's eyes narrow, forcing you to straighten up and meet her gaze.

"Repeat what I said." Her voice rings out, making you swallow hard.

"M-Ma'am?"

"The lesson. Enumerate the rights of medication. All of them."

You hesitate, your mind racing as anxiety knots in your stomach. Too many eyes are on you, and you're painfully aware you didn't catch a single word. 'Why did I zone out? I didn't hear any of it,' you think', inwardly panicking.

Then, from the corner of your eye, you spot Tiffany sliding a piece of paper toward you, the answers scribbled on it. Just as you start to glance down, the professor speaks again.

"Miss Mizuki." Her icy tone cuts through, and Tiffany nearly jumps in her seat.

"Ma'am?" Tiffany stammers, hastily hiding the paper under her notebook.

"Stand up," the teacher commands, her gaze sharp. "I didn't ask you to help her, but since you insist, stand up."

"Shit." You hear Tiffany curse under her breath, making you both breathe deeply.

"You," The teacher points at your friend, "Recite the rights of medications and you," she points at you. "Rationalize."

Your heart starts to bang against your chest, looking over to Tiffany before taking a deep breath.

"Start."

The silence feels crushing as the lecturer watches you both, her expression unreadable. You can't help but glance toward Atsumu's empty seat, quietly blaming him. If only he hadn't occupied your mind... you wouldn't have drifted off and landed in this mess.

"Right patient," Tiffany starts, her voice breaking the silence. You jolt, anxiety flaring.

The lecturer's gaze shifts to you, and you swallow hard.

"W-Well, it's important to ensure the medication is given to the right patient-"

"And how will you confirm the identity of the patient in front of you?" the teacher cuts you off sharply.

"B-By asking for their full name," you stammer.

"What if the patient is unconscious?"

You take a deep breath, thinking fast. "I would need to check their chart or confirm with a present relative." You're relieved as the words come out smoothly.
