Road to the Jones Ranch
Wyoming
1960
10 Hours Later
Indiana Jones walked with his three kids up the mountain road to the Jones ranch. They were weary but grinning. Shorty gripped Lizavet's hand as they shared kisses.
Emily trotted ahead of them, trying to keep up with Indy and give Shorty and Lizavet some privacy to kiss.
Indy eased his arm around Emily's shoulders. "Almost there, Em. Doin' ok?"
She nodded, fighting through pain. "I'll just need to cook up some salve to help with the wounds. They'll scar deep. And with all the ash from the volcano I'm kind of afraid they'll get infected. I should have gotten medical treatment on Attu - but - there were no lady doctors and -" She looked at Indy.
He grinned. "You wanted to see the barrow grave - little rival."
"Volcanic ash is sometimes healing," Lizavet offered.
"There's a hospital in the state," Indy replied. "If you need to get some medical help I'm sure one of us can drive you."
"But it's explaining it, Dad."
"Oh. Yeah. They would ask questions," Indy paused.
"Mom's gonna ask a lot of questions."
Lizavet broke her kiss with Shorty. "Will she accept us?"
"Absolutely, kids," Indy replied. "Marion has always... She's always tried to be welcoming. I just haven't respected that and treated her generosity well. And I've gotten fire. But she'll always welcome kids." He turned to face them. "But... kids.... don't tell your mother about what happened to me." He swallowed and pulled at the military shirt's collar, hoping to hide the scar by buttoning the top button. But it choked him, so he gave up. "Especially this incident... and how I got the Seventh Sword of Diya."
"But Dad!" Shorty exclaimed. "It wasn't on the list."
"He's right, Poppa," Lizavet smiled, shyly. "Besides, if you add it to the list of things not to do - we will do it."
Emily ticked the list off on her fingers. "Don't die."
Indy groaned with half grin and skyward pitch of his eyes.
Emily continued to grin. "Don't unleash any ancient evils."
"We put them back!" Shorty protested.
Emily held up her hand with number three. "Try not to make anything explode."
"That was a volcano. We cannot be responsible for that havoc," Lizavet declared. "I am a specialist in such matters."
"And I woke you up when we got home!" Emily shrugged.
Indy grimaced. "Hon, you put your smelliest sock under my nose. That was not waking me up. Waking me up would have involved coffee."
"Ohhhhh," Emily blinked. "Thanks Dad. Man expectations are confusing. Next time I'll spill coffee on you."
Indy stared at his daughter, who's grin matched his. "Em, you have my heart, and your mother's trouble."
The Jones Ranch came into view. The farmhouse sat next to a corral and across a wide driveway was a barn. Marion and Indy's truck from their early days of marriage sat with its hood up waiting to be fixed. A grease rag hung out of the engine block with some tools. A cat sat on a fencepost, already glaring at Indy, reminding him of Marion's fury and the last time he'd wandered in from adventure.
"Shorty, Lizavet... welcome home," Indy offered.
Lizavet looked around. "It's so beautiful here."
"And quiet," Shorty paused. "Not like Grandmother's Chinese restaurant in downtown Philly at all."
Emily grinned. "Give it a minute - Laurel's not quiet."
Indy smiled. "My granddaughter, by Em's older sister, Annie... Laurel inherited a lot of Marion. Annie got almost none of her mother's temper - Laurel on the other hand -"
The house's side door banged.
"GWANDPA'S HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
