Nika Mühl sat quietly in the corner of the coffee shop, sipping her vanilla latte, the familiar warmth of the drink soothing her as she took in the quiet atmosphere. She often came here after practice to unwind, enjoying the brief moments of solitude away from the chaos of basketball and campus life. Her gaze wandered lazily around the café, taking in the soft chatter of customers and the mellow hum of background music.
That was until her eyes landed on a familiar face. Carla.
Nika's relaxed demeanor shifted instantly when she noticed Carla sitting in the far corner, laughing with someone. A guy. Nika's jaw clenched. She didn't know who he was, but she didn't like how comfortable Carla looked with him, how easily that laugh spilled from her lips-laughs that Nika hadn't heard in what felt like forever.
Without a second thought, Nika stood up, taking her coffee with her as she made her way toward them. Her steps were deliberate, her mind racing with annoyance. She reached Carla's table, the guy's eyes meeting hers, and Nika shot him a glare that could freeze over a volcano. She slid into the seat next to Carla without asking, placing her arm across the back of Carla's chair, making it clear she had no intention of leaving.
Carla, sensing a presence beside her, turned and froze when she saw who it was. Her mouth dropped slightly in shock. "N-Nika? What are you doing here?" she stuttered, her heart picking up speed at the unexpected sight of Nika so close.
Nika's intense gaze softened as her eyes locked onto Carla's. It had been too long since she'd seen that face-the face that could make her heart do flips without even trying. "Well, hello, "Moja lijepa andelica ," Nika murmured in Croatian (My beautiful angel), her tone gentle but laced with possessiveness. "I was just here to enjoy some coffee... until I saw you laughing with this idiot that isn't me," she added, her voice sharpening as she glared again at the guy, who was now looking increasingly uncomfortable. "Who is this idiot, Lijepa?" she asked, the term of endearment sounding more like a warning.
Carla swallowed the lump in her throat, feeling the tension rolling off Nika in waves. She could see how tense Nika's jaw was, the subtle clench that gave away her frustration. "This is Clive," Carla explained quickly, her voice soft but steady. "He's just helping me with math, that's all."
Nika's eyes didn't leave Clive, her glare only intensifying. "Do not flirt with what's mine, Clive. I do not like you," Nika said coldly, her voice like ice. "This girl right here," Nika continued as she pulled Carla closer, her arm tightening around her shoulder, "is mine. Got that? Only mine."
Clive paled, choking on his own saliva as he hurried to respond. "Y-yes, I got it," he stuttered, standing up so fast he nearly knocked over his chair. "I-I need to go study for my Biochemistry test anyway. I'll, uh, see you around, Carla."
Clive practically sprinted out of the coffee shop, leaving Carla and Nika alone at the table. Carla turned, her eyes narrowing as she glared at Nika. "You can't just scare off every guy-or girl-I talk to, Nika," Carla scolded, her voice filled with frustration. "I'm not your property."
Nika's eyes darkened at Carla's words. Leaning in, her lips brushing against Carla's ear, she whispered low and dangerously, "Oh, baby... you haven't learned yet, have you?"
Carla blinked, confused by the sudden shift in Nika's tone. Before she could respond, Nika leaned back slightly, her face mere inches from Carla's. "Forget the date after the game against Boston University," Nika said, her voice firm and commanding. "I'm taking you out tomorrow. I can't wait anymore. I need to make you officially mine, so no idiot can even think about being near you or touching you."
Carla's heart raced at the intensity in Nika's voice, her breath catching in her throat. She opened her mouth to protest, but no words came out. Nika stood up abruptly, fixing her with a soft look that made Carla's stomach flip.
"Are you going to the party tonight on campus?" Nika asked, her voice gentler now, though her eyes still held that possessive glint.
Carla could only nod, her voice lost somewhere between her pounding heart and the whirlwind of emotions Nika had stirred up.
"Good," Nika said, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I'll see you there, Lijepa."
Before Carla could process what was happening, Nika leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, lingering for a moment before pulling away. She gave Carla one last smirk before turning and walking out of the coffee shop, leaving Carla speechless and staring after her.
Carla slumped back in her chair, her mind racing. She hadn't expected Nika to show up, let alone act the way she did. And now... a date tomorrow? Officially Nika's? The idea sent a shiver down her spine, a mix of excitement and uncertainty settling in her chest.
But one thing was clear-Nika Mühl was not someone to be ignored, and Carla's heart was already dangerously close to being completely hers.
