{Y'all, I'm going to spoil something for you all right now. My favorite chapters of this story are chapters 7, 25, and 26. That is all the details I will give. I need to go in and add real titles. Ok, enjoy the chapter}
"Are you ready, kiddo? " my dad asks me in the car in front of my dorm building. The car is packed to the brim with everything I will need these next four and a half months. I'm dreading it, honestly.
"Not at all," I say.
"Have you talked to her?" He asks.
"Not really. She texted me after roommate assignments went out, but I told her we would be fine," I say. I have a weird pit in my stomach, and I know it is from the fact that in a few short hours, my dad is leaving me stranded here.
"Harper, I know you. You are not going to be fine," My dad says.
"Dad, it will be fine," I say.
"Just go easy on her," He says.
We unbuckle and get out of the car. I am about to go right in, but my dad stops me. "Don't go in empty-handed"
I roll my eyes and go to the trunk. He hands me one of the lighter boxes with some clothes in it. We head to the front desk and check in. The pit in my stomach grows. I wouldn't be nervous to see Jessie for the first time in over a year. I am telling you right now, I am not letting Jessie fucking Solace, of all people, stop me from my future.
We take the elevator up to the 5th floor.
"Nervous?" My dad asks.
"Not at all."
The elevator doors open, and the sign in front shows which rooms are where. We hit a left and walk down the first hallway. Then we take another left, my room is about halfway down.
I fumble with the key for a moment. It's an electric one, and it's going to take some time to get used to. I go inside, and the room is bare except for some beds, desks, and closets.
"Do you know which bed is yours?" My dad asks.
"I was assigned bed A, so I guess I'll just take that one"
The room is small, you walk in, and the door to the bathroom is on the right with double sinks next to it. The opposite side has two built-in closets. I open one up and take a peak. It was spacious enough, but knowing me, I'll always need more.
Next to the closets were the two desks with a mini fridge in between them. There was a microwave on top of the fridge.
Opposite the desks are our beds. Under the beds were 2 dressers. Does this university not know I have way more clothes than they gave us space for? Both beds are pushed up against the wall, with a half wall separating them. At least I'll get a little bit of privacy. I knew about that wall from the photos, and I made sure to bring a curtain to make it a full wall between Jessie and me.
Adjacent to the door was a huge window. It doesn't open, but it does have a nice view of the courtyard. Putting a pool there would have been a nice addition.
I take the bed right next to the window. My dad puts the box he brought up next to it, I put mine next to him.
"Does it feel like home yet?" He asks.
"Absolutely not. It is going to need a lot of decorating," I say.
"It feels like a hotel room," He says.
"I know I hate it," I say.
"Come on, let's go get the rest of the boxes," He says.
We head back downstairs and start unloading the car. God bless the cart my dad brought. It made moving in a breeze. It takes us about half an hour to bring up all the boxes.
"Well, it's almost noon. Do you want to go get lunch?" He asks, looking at the mountain of boxes we had just placed in this dorm.
"Yes. I'm starving," I say.
We head back downstairs and go to the first restaurant we see. It was a cute little dinner. I personally love a diner. With the number of cars here, it must be a campus hangout. We go inside and get a table. Luckily, there wasn't a wait since there were only two of us. Everyone else was waiting for larger tables to clear out.
We sit down and look over the menu. I decide what I am getting immediately. If I am going to be without a stover for the next 4 months, I will be getting a grilled cheese. My dad takes what feels like an eternity to pick out what he wants. He is going to get a burger and fries, maybe even treat himself to a milkshake with all the heavy lifting he just did. I don't even know why he bothers looking over the menu.
A few moments later the waitress comes over and takes our order. My dad gets a burger and fries with a vanilla milkshake, no surprise there.
"Are you upset your mom didn't come to drop you off?" He asks.
"Eh, not really," I shrug my shoulders.
It would have been nice for her to support her kid leaving for school, but I guess I get it, I wouldn't want to be in a room with my ex-husband and ex-boyfriend, especially when I cheated on that ex-husband with said ex-boyfriend. Jessie Solace's father used to date my mother. That man is an asshole. Jessica must take after her dad.
"You know, there is this crazy thing people do where they forgive someone after they've done something wrong," My dad says. I swear I hear that exact sentence come out of his mouth once a week.
"I'd rather not do that. People should be held responsible for their actions," I say bluntly.
"Oh I feel so bad for what Jessie is going to go through this semester," He says.
"Oh well. It is well deserved after what she did to me," I say.
"Be nice to the girl. It is hard enough not having a mother, raising your little brother, and having that man as her father." He says.
"I'll see what I can do," I say. I can't make any promises on my actions from here on out. Once I see Jessie, whatever happens happens.
"I'm not asking you to like her or be her friend. I'm telling you, you have to be nice to her," He says.
I roll my eyes. "Dad, I'm telling you there is no being nice to Jessie. She is not a nice person."
He says.
Right as he says, "I don't even think you believe that," our food comes out. Thank god, I was just saved from this conversation.
Once we finish eating, we make a quick trip to the grocery store to grab some snacks and other dorm supplies, as well as some last-minute things I may need while I'm here.
The entire car ride he is pestering me about having everything I will need. Do you have enough money? Did you wash your bed sheets? Do you want to stop to get more school supplies? I am going to be fine. He just cares about me, unlike my mother.
We arrive back at the dorm and head upstairs. I open the door with that stupid key again, it doesn't take me as long as the first time. I walk inside and look at all the work I have ahead of me. Thankfully Jessie still isn't here yet so I'll have some peace while I do it.
I must have summoned the devil because right as I think that, I hear someone start fumbling with the lock.
"It's open," My dad yells.
In walks Jessie, her homewrecker father, her little brother, who must have grown at least a foot since I last saw him, and some random woman. I look from the woman to Jessie and then back to the woman before turning to my dad. It was pretty damn obvious who she is.
"So what were you saying about not having a mother?" I ask with a smug little grin on my face.
