~Tony's POV~

"Check it out, boys. Tony's got jungle fever."

My friends laughed and snapped me out of my daydream. The words came from my best friend, Sammy. I had just noticed that I was starting at the girl again.

"What are you talking about, man?" I asked, averting my attention from the girl. I only got to see her a couple times a day, and it annoyed me when my friends interrupted one of those times.

"You know, jungle fever? When you got the hots for a nigger," Sammy replied, taking out a cigarette. Knowing that if he got caught smoking in the halls at school, he'd be suspended. But that's probably what he wanted.

"Whatever man. The girl is a dream," I replied. She still stood by her lockers, talking to her friends. Her long, curly hair cascading down her shoulders, big Brown eyes you could get lost in, and brown skin so smooth you could actually mistake it for chocolate. Black or not, she was stunning.

"Stare at the nigger all you want, Tony but be careful. What would your Pops think about you making a move on her?"

He wouldn't think, he'd kill me, I immediately thought. My father wanted his bloodline to stay "pure", which meant I was only allowed to date and eventually marry an Italian like me. And I'd have Italian kids, so I could pass on the family business.

"I'm just looking is all. Is that a crime?" I asked, shrugging. "Hell yeah it's a crime. Anything involved with blacks is a crime," my other friend Frank interjected.

"Nobody asked you, fatso," Sammy snapped. They continued to argue and call each other names and I resumed staring at the girl. She waved goodbye to her friends and shut her locker, and there was a split second when her eyes met mine. She looked away quickly, though. She was real shy.

I watched as she walked in the other direction, never even looking back at me. And she knew I was staring.

"Sorry to interrupt, Tony, but we're ditching school for the rest of the day," Sammy suddenly said, snapping his fingers in front of my face. "You coming or no?"

"You know my Pops would kill me," I replied, and my friends nodded. He wanted me to stay in school, be smart, learn numbers and all that good stuff. I had to be sharp if I wanted to learn his business and not get killed.

"Catch you later schoolboy," Frank laughed as they walked off. There were only two more periods left in the day, and I hated both. Hopefully, there'd be some excitement waiting for me as soon as I walked through those school doors.

~Diana's POV~

I stood at the school gates, waiting for my best friend Regina so we could walk home, like we did every day. We'd lived in the same apartment building since we were both 2, and we used to hate each other. She thought I was stuck up and mean, and I thought she was bossy and rude.

But, our mom's were coworkers at the hair salon, and eventually, we became as close as sisters. But right now, I wanted to kill her for leaving me to walk by myself, for the third time this week. I knew she was probably off with her boyfriend of the month, Kenny, making out in his Cadillac. I scoffed at the thought of it.
