Mallory sat in the car, after what felt like their millionth stop at a random restroom in the middle of nowhere. She was pretty sure by now that the only reason they made stops at almost every rest place in sight was so Sarah and Aaron could make out behind the building and have some privacy.
She couldn't get mad at that, because she also wanted to get out of this damn car every once in a while. Mallory and her friends had been on this roadtrip for almost nine hours now, and she was exhausted. While she waited for the slowpokes, Penelope, Sarah, and Aaron, she turned her head to the driver at the moment, Oliver. "Do you think we can stop at a restaurant if there's one? Not a gas station with snacks - an actual food place. My stomach is getting tired of Lays chips." she says.
He nodded, looking back at her before he cleaned his glasses, putting them back on after. "Yeah, when we can find one. I think it said on the map that this was the last place for a while... but they might all be closed by then."
She heard the car door open, and her friends came in one by one. Of course, Sarah and Aaron sat together in the middle row, they've been a couple for a year already. Poor Penelope was shoved into the very back seat by herself. She was brought along since she is Oliver's sister, and wanted to come on the roadtrip. Mallory had a feeling Sarah didn't like Penelope that much, mostly because she told her that, and it was quite obvious with the way she would always correct her on things and ignore her other times, it seemed the blonde girl couldn't catch a break from the brunette. Penelope seemed to notice this and copied her attitude toward her, which was fair in all honesty.
They didn't have a specific location they were going to on this trip. Mallory didn't really enjoy car rides, but she was going because her friends were, and wherever Sarah went, she went. They've been bestfriends for around five years.
"Hey, guys. I think that car is following us," Sarah says, glancing over her shoulder to peek out the window in the back. "It's been behind us since it turned down onto the street, and they even parked at the same gas station."
Penelope shook her head, not even looking back. "It's just a coincidence." she replied, scrolling on her phone. Mallory looks over, and sees the dark vehicle behind them. It was almost invisible with it being nighttime, their headlights weren't on. "I'll keep an eye on it." Oliver says.
She started to hear snoring, and saw that Aaron fell asleep minutes after their conversation. Well, you can tell he's not worried! She thought to herself.
Hours later, she had let sleep take over, and woke up to Oliver tapping her on the shoulder. "Mal, we're here."
They were at a restaurant. A smile formed on her face. "No more Lays, huh?" Oliver said with a small smirk, she gave him a side hug and got out of the car, walking with everyone as they stepped inside. It was a fancy restaurant. "How is this place even open still?" Penelope spoke with a yawn as she scratched her head.
"It's a miracle." Aaron chuckled, walking to where the hostess was. She greeted him and asked if he had a reservation. "No, ma'am. Can we get a table for..." he briefly turned to the group. "Five?"
She nodded and showed them to a table at the back of the restaurant. It was only a large booth and a small table in this area. "My apologies, but there were a lot of tables taken, and a birthday party reserved. Is this fine?"
No one spoke, as if they wanted a better table. It's like two in the morning, who are we to be picky? "It's okay, we'll take it." Mallory finally says. The lady smiles, places some menus, then walks back to the entrance. They all sit down, Mallory next to Oliver, and Penelope, Aaron, and Sarah in that order on the other side.
