Chapter 5.
It's Monday today and it's my second week on the job. So far I've only been doing paroles around the island with my partner, Nicolas.
I placed my hand on the scanner by the metal door, once I reached the headquarters. I did my usual routine of claiming my weapons from Annie, then going up to Mr. Sheridan's office-where he usually gives me my daily agenda. For the most part it's been the same, but today he wanted me to do something different.
"I want you to go to the Control Room and follow Mr. Tomlinson's orders. I want to see how well you can do in a different environment, Ms. Shaw" he says, leaning back against his chair. I nodded in response then left his office.
My boots against the marble floor was the only sound present in the whole floor, even though there were people rushing to places. I looked around and noticed people wearing the same black, long sleeved, tight uniform. All these people looked like they were all in the right place. It made me wonder if I looked like I knew what I was doing.
When I reached the main control room, I slid my ID card on the scanner then walked in. Louis was standing in the middle of the room, staring at a huge computer screen on the wall with his hands on his waist - Until the doors made a noise and he turned to look at me. "I'm looking for Mr. Tomlinson." I said.
Louis smiled a little, "That's me."
I've known this boy for about two weeks and we live at the same house yet I had no idea what his last name is - nor did I know he was the head of this unit; for that matter, I didn't even know what his job was. Wow.
"So I guess Mr. Sheridan sent you up here?" He spoke and I nodded. "Well then I guess you can start here." Louis smiled. He pulled the chair closest to him and set it right next to his desk and tapped the chair, indicating me to sit down. Louis bent down so our faces were leveled. His face was so close to mine, I could feel his breath on my cheek. He wasn't looking at me, instead he was looking at the monitor in front of us. He gave me instructions but I was staring at his face until - "Take a picture, it'll last longer" his voice takes me back to reality.
Fuck. How do I play it cool? "Psh. I wasn't staring." I shrugged. "What makes you think that?" I nervously laughed.
Louis just chuckled "Okay, I never said you were staring but whatever you say Ms. Shaw". He turned around, I couldn't see his face but I could almost feel him smirking.
"Uh, you can call me Harlow" I respond as I type in some code he wants be to transcribe.
He turned around and I find that has an amused expression plastered on his face. "Oh, I know that Ms. Shaw. But you see we are in a workplace so I'd like to keep it professional" he teases. Then turns around, smirking.
Goodness.
When I got home, I went straight to the kitchen where both Landyn and Sophia were. I grabbed a pint of ice cream and a spoon then sat on one of the bar stools we had in front of the counter.
We all made small talk as we ate our food.Just as I was delightfully engulfing in my desert I heard the door creak open. "Why, hello Ms. Shaw" Louis greeted heading for the kitchen. He looked at my two friends and smiled at them.
"You know when I left the building I was hoping that we'd walk home together but I found out you left" Louis pouted.
Before I could say anything, Landyn spoke, "Awww that is so cute." If my best friend was an emoji she'd definitely be the face with heart eyes. "Harlow, why didn't you wait for him?" She frowned.
"Well, uhh, I didn't know you wanted me to wait for you." I said looking down at the ice cream.
"Oh. I just thought that since we live in the same house and practically get home at the same time, you'd wait for me." He admitted quietly. Then he paused as if waiting for me to say something. When I didn't he cleared his throat. "But it's alright, night ladies."
Wow, I feel like an ass.
When Louis left to go upstairs, I didn't feel like finishing my ice cream. So, I followed after him and went straight to my bed.
"What was that all about?" Sophia asked. I felt the bed dip a little telling me she was sitting right next to me.
"I don't know" I sighed. "I honestly don't know but that made me feel like a total bitch" I admitted.
I've gotten really close to Sophia over these past few weeks. It's like we've known each other because we seem to have lots in common but yet we are so different.
Moments later I heard Landyn walk in. "So Louis likes you, huh?" She smirks then looks at Sophia, who then later smirks as well.
What's with people and smirking today? It seems like it's National Smirk Day or something.
I feel like their communicating to each other with their eyes, but I can't get what they're telling each other.
"Oh. Okay" Landyn says nodding.
"So, we have plan" Sophia mentions, causing me to sit up from my lying position. "But I'm not sure if you're going to agree with it."
"Oh come on! You know I'd do just about anything to leave this stupid ass place." I say, you could hear the desperation in my tone.
"Fine. But it had involve someone else" she speaks.
"Okay... Well who is it gonna involve?" I ask curiosity taking over.
"Louis."
Oh, shit.
