CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Kie dropped me off at Tannyhill before the sun was even up. It was pouring rain but I still managed to sneak inside. As soon as I started walking up the stairs, I heard a creaking. I looked to See Ward coming down and he looked at me with a brow raised.

"Rafe asleep?" I ask softly.

He shakes his head. "Rafe didn't come home last night.. You haven't talked to him?"

I swallow hard. No because I was with my fucking ex-boyfriend and my husband has no idea. Instead I shake my head. "No... He said he had to run out late last night and he said he'd be home late. I told him I'd also be late but... I guess he's still out."

Ward nods. "I heard a car door, must have been you coming home."

"I heard boats when I was walking up the steps. And I swear I heard someone sneeze. But it must have been you."

A shake of his head. "No. I didn't... Let me go check outside."

I stay on the stairs while Ward goes to the front door. It's just the sprinklers being on and the rain that's pouring down until all of a sudden there's FBI everywhere. My Routledge and Pogue instincts make me run all the way up to my room.

I hear them screaming "Where's Rafe Cameron? We're here for Rafe Cameron!"

"He's not home." Ward argues with them. "He didn't come home at all last night."

They barge into the house and while I'm upstairs in the bedroom I look at my phone. I check Rafe's location. He's at Barry's and hasn't texted me. I know they'll try to track my texting records if I try to call or text him so..

I smash my phone.

They can't try to look up his location from my phone if my phone is smashed to bits. I place it on the desk and sit there on the edge of the bed until Rose comes up into my room and closes the door behind her.

"Where is he?" She whispers.

"Barry's." I whisper back. "Don't tell anyone but Ward."

A nod. "You and me.. Later we're going run errands. They're going to be looking for Rafe and watching our every move so... We're going to find a way to make this work. You need to get to him and warn him of what's happening and get him out of here."

I don't know what comes over me but I find myself hugging onto Rose tightly. She's the mother I never had but always wanted. Rose hasn't given up on me once since I've joined this family. I used to think she was stuck up and didn't like me but in truth it was because she didn't know me. Now that she does.. She's my mom.

After SBI tore up the entire house and got pissed that I had a smashed phone and that they couldn't find a trace of anything in Rafe and I's room they finally left. I got myself dressed and went down to the kitchen and made myself some waffles in the toaster real quick.

"Ew, nothing on those?" Wheezie says as she grabs a glass of orange juice. "At least put some syrup on them."

"I haven't even taken them out of the toaster yet." I roll my eyes. "I'm trying not to have a panic attack so I'm just trying to eat something before I puke from nerves. I haven't even slept yet.. This is all just ridiculous. Rafe did nothing wrong."

Wheezie raises a brow at me. "Then why isn't he here?"

"It's complicated." I go to the cabinet and grab the peanut butter. Once I pull my waffles from the toaster I put the peanut butter on them and Wheezie gasps in disgust. "You get mad when I don't put anything on them. You get mad when I put something on them.. You're impossible, child."
