Chapter 1

Riker POV

"Riker, can you go get the mail please?" Mom asked.

"Sure," I said, heading for the door.

I went outside and got the mail. I started looking through it and saw something with my name on it, which was weird because I don't usually get mail.

I opened it. It was a very formal looking letter.

Mr. Riker Lynch,

You have been recruited to join our spy program. Please report to the address listed below at your earliest convenience. For the safety of yourself and the program, you are not permitted to tell anyone about this. Failure to appear can result in jail time.

I have absolutely no clue what this is about.

But in case it's real, I'm not going to tell anyone. But how could this be real? Why would they just randomly recruit me to be a spy? I can't do it anyway because I have R5 to worry about.

Whatever. I'll go tomorrow. The address isn't too far from here.

I folded the letter and shoved it in my pocket, and then went back inside to give the mail to mom.

"Thanks, honey," mom said.

"You're welcome," I said, heading to my room.

As soon as I was in my room, I tried googling the name of the agency on the letter, but nothing came up. Which either means it's fake or it's real and it's so secret that it's not on the internet.

I don't know how to feel about this whole thing.

Later...

Riker POV

I couldn't stop thinking about the letter I got earlier. I was scared it was real. I didn't like the threat of jail time if I didn't show up.

But I have a plan.

Tomorrow I'm going to go to the address on the letter and just explain to them that I didn't sign up for this spy program thing, and even if I did, I can't do it anyway because I have R5 and we're going on tour in a few weeks. And then hopefully they'll just let me go home and that will be the end of that.

"Riker," Rocky said, getting my attention.

"What?" I asked.

"We're having a band meeting and you're not paying attention," dad said, annoyed.

"Sorry. I just... don't feel so well," I mumbled.

"What's wrong?" Dad asked.

"Nothing. My stomach just kind of hurts."

"Ok, well we have rehearsal tomorrow, so try to be better by then. We're going over our tour set lists," dad said.

"Tomorrow?" I asked.

"Yes, you would have known that if you were paying attention," dad said.

"I can't tomorrow," I said.

"Why not?" Dad asked.

"I have a... audition?"

"For what?" Dad asked.

"Just um... some movie. I forget the name of it. It's just a small part. Nothing crazy," I said, trying to make something up.

"Ok, well we'll just have to rehearse without you then," dad said.

"That's fine," I said.

"Ok, that's it. Band meeting is over," dad said.

"Good luck on your audition tomorrow," Rydel said.

"Thanks," I said, feeling guilty about lying.

I got up and went up to my room. Obviously I don't like lying to them, but if that letter was real, and I'm not allowed to tell anyone, I don't want to break the rules. What if breaking the rules means jail time too?

I hate this whole situation. And I wish I could tell dad and just have him tell me what to do.

Whatever. I'll just go tomorrow and explain that this whole thing is just a misunderstanding and I can't be a spy, and things will go back to normal. I need to ask them where they even got my name from. How did I get on their list to be called to be a spy? This whole thing is just weird.

I got ready for bed and then fell asleep, worrying about tomorrow.
