୨୧y/n and mattheo stood in y/n's dorm room, voices rising as they argued over his recent closeness with esme sinclair.
"don't you think it's strange? hanging out with another girl more than your own girlfriend?" y/n asked, crossing her arms. "and she's rude to me, mattheo. it's like she doesn't care that i'm there."
"oh my god, she's just a friend, y/n! why are you making this such a big deal?" mattheo shot back, exasperation clear in his voice.
"maybe because you've barely even looked at me all week?" y/n said, frustration bubbling up. "all i see is you with her."
"don't piss me off." he rolled his eyes, tone turning colder.
"why are you being such an asshole!" y/n's voice cracked, tears starting to form.
"don't. fucking. cry." mattheo's jaw clenched, his words sharp.
"why are you acting like this? do you like her more?" she choked out, feeling her chest tighten. "just... just leave me if you like her more!"
at that, mattheo snapped. he flipped her desk over, sending books and decorations crashing to the floor. y/n gasped, startled by the loud, shattering noise and the sudden violence in his actions. tears streamed down her face as mattheo stormed out, leaving her alone with the mess and her thoughts.
sobbing quietly, y/n sat on the edge of her bed, wiping her cheeks. 'is this it?' she wondered, heart aching. after a moment, she took a deep breath, got up, and walked to her overturned desk. tying her hair up in a claw clip, she grabbed a trash bin and began to clean up. she picked up shards of glass carefully, sweeping up stray bits, her movements slow but steady.
when she finally finished, she set her desk upright and surveyed the damage—scratches, chips in the wood, items knocked askew. she put everything back in place, checking her books to make sure they were undamaged, then set down the last decoration and sat on her bed, sighing deeply. even though the room looked orderly again, her mind was still racing over what mattheo had done.
deciding she'd had enough for one night, she lay down and closed her eyes, hoping sleep would bring some escape from the turmoil.
the next morning, she woke to find a large bouquet of flowers on her desk. surprised, she got up, feet touching the cold floor as she walked over to them. the soft petals of the tulips brushed her fingers, and beside them, she noticed a small note.
"i'm so sorry for flipping your desk over, and i'm sorry for everything. i didn't mean the things i said last night. i'll buy you a new desk. i'm so sorry – mattheo."
she let out a soft scoff, setting the note aside before beginning to get ready for the day. she was putting on her bow when a light knock sounded at the door. even though she knew who it was, she still asked, "who is it?"
"it's me," mattheo's voice came through, quieter than usual.
"i don't want to see you right now." she kept her voice cold, adjusting her robe and fixing her tie.
"y/n, please. i'm really sorry for what i did, and i regret it. can i come inside? i don't want to do this in the hallway."
she paused, considering. finally, she sighed, "fine."
the door creaked open, and mattheo stepped inside, dressed in his uniform, looking remorseful. "i'm really sorry for flipping over your desk, baby. you don't know how much guilt i felt seeing it all cleaned up when i came in. i should've been the one to do it. i'll buy you a new desk, and i'll stop hanging out with esme. i promise."
"are you really going to stop hanging out with her?" she asked, searching his face for sincerity.
"yes, i promise. please, forgive me." his eyes held a plea.
y/n sighed, taking a moment before finally nodding. "fine. but i swear, if i see you even close to her, we're done."
"i love you," he murmured, pulling her close, covering her face with kisses. y/n laughed softly, warmth filling her chest.
"i love you too," she whispered back, a small smile breaking through.
