The evening sky was a deep indigo by the time Lian and Zeng arrived at the edge of the bustling market square, their cloaks concealing their faces from prying eyes. The flickering lanterns cast dancing shadows, giving the scene a mysterious, dreamlike quality. Zeng scanned the crowd warily, his hand instinctively hovering near his sword, while Lian's eyes darted between faces, his gaze sharp.
Then, out of the shadows, Xiu appeared. Her green eyes glinted with determination, and she moved with a quiet confidence that hinted at her familiarity with places most would avoid. She inclined her head toward them and led the way through a series of winding alleys, each quieter and more foreboding than the last.
They finally emerged on the outskirts of the Whispering Woods, where ancient trees loomed like silent sentinels in the dark. Their twisted roots tangled, and the faint, eerie rustle of the leaves seemed to echo whispered secrets. Xiu turned to them, her expression grave.
"Once we enter, stay close," she instructed, her voice barely above a whisper. "The Black Veil has set traps everywhere. They're subtle but deadly—one misstep, and we'll alert their scouts."
"Lovely," Lian muttered, glancing sidelong at Zeng. "Your idea of a midnight stroll is getting more adventurous by the minute."
Zeng's lips curved slightly, but he kept his eyes on Xiu. "Lead the way, then."
Xiu nodded, and they fell into a cautious formation: Lian and Zeng on either side, with Xiu in the lead. They moved silently through the shadows, weaving around tree roots that snaked across the ground like the coiled tails of hidden creatures. The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and pine, the sounds of the night intensifying in the silence.
After a while, Xiu paused, crouching low. She pointed ahead to a barely visible thread running across the forest floor—a tripwire, thin and nearly invisible.
"Step over it," she whispered. "The Black Veil uses these to alert their lookouts."
Lian nodded, stepping over the wire with practiced ease. Zeng followed, his movements graceful, but he couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The shadows seemed to breathe around them, growing darker, more oppressive with each step.
As they continued, Lian moved close enough to Zeng that their arms brushed, his presence a strangely comforting anchor in the dark. Zeng felt his heartbeat quicken, though he kept his expression calm, unwilling to reveal the subtle tension that had built between them. The silence stretched on, broken only by the soft crunch of their footsteps.
At last, they reached a small clearing, and Xiu knelt down, sweeping her hand over a patch of ground covered in moss and leaves. Beneath the foliage, faint markings were etched into the soil—a symbol Zeng recognized as one of the code symbol of Black Veil's.
"This is it," Xiu murmured, her voice tinged with a strange reverence. "The entrance to the Silent Tree's grove."
She produced a small vial from her pouch and poured a few drops onto the symbol. Immediately, the ground seemed to tremble, and a section of the soil shifted, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Without hesitation, Xiu descended, her form vanishing into the shadows. Zeng followed, and Lian brought up the rear, his hand instinctively brushing against Zeng's arm as they stepped into the cool, damp air below.
The staircase led them into a cavern lit by faint blue lights embedded in the stone walls. Symbols similar to those on the parchment lined the walls, some glowing faintly as if resonating with hidden energy.
"What is this place?" Lian asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Xiu glanced over her shoulder, her face softened by the dim blue glow. "An ancient sanctuary, older than the Black Veil itself. If there's a code or message hidden here, it'll be somewhere within these walls."
