Benjamin Grant tightened his grip on the steering wheel as he sped down the winding highway, the dark sky above him mirroring the storm brewing in his heart. His phone was pressed to his ear, the voice on the other end barely audible over the sound of the engine.
“I’ve got it,James” Benjamin said, his voice tense. “I’ve got the evidence. This—this will turn the whole case over.”
The person on the other end responds, but Benjamin’s attention shifted. In the rearview mirror, headlights loomed larger, closer. A truck, larger than any ordinary vehicle, following him, too close for comfort. Benjamin's pulse quickened.
“I’ll meet you at the your house,” he continued, trying to sound calm. “But I think I’m being followed.”
He end's the call abruptly and presses his foot harder on the gas. The speedometer climbed, but so did the truck behind him, matching his every move.
Benjamin weaving through the empty road, his mind racing as fast as the car. The evidence tucked away safely in the briefcase beside him. It was enough to bring down powerful people, enough to ruin the lives that ruined many.
His heart pounded as he took a sharp turn to avoid the truck the tires of the car screeching, but the truck stayed with him, closer now. Whoever was driving wanted him off the road, and they weren’t going to stop now.
Suddenly, the truck surged forward, ramming into the back of his car with screeching crunch of metal. Benjamin swerved, struggling to regain control, but the truck hit him again, harder this time. His car spun wildly as his vision blurred, the edge of the cliff rushing toward him.
One final hit, and his car sailed through the guardrail, weightless for a moment as it careened off the cliff, plunging into the darkness below.
As Benjamin's head hit the steering wheel, he heard a sharp snapping sound. His vision went black. The screech of the truck's tires, once deafening, now faded into the distance like a beast satisfied with it's kill.
In the dark depths of his own mind, memories flooded his mind in quick, jarring flashes. His daughter’s sunken face in a hospital bed, pale and fragile. His wife’s heart-wrenching sobs, her hand clutching his in desperation. And the images from the files the horrifying truths he had uncovered, the evil that would destroy more lives if it remained hidden.
Suddenly, a blinding white light pierced the darkness, overpowering the flood of memories.
"Am I dead?" Benjamin thought, his mind sluggish, disoriented.
Before he could grasp what was happening, a hand yanked him out of the wreckage with surprising force. The world snapped back into focus.
“Are you okay?” a soft, but firm voice asked.
He blinked, still disoriented, his eyes focusing on the source of the voice a beautiful woman, her face calm and composed despite the chaos around them.
“Thanks to you... I guess I’m not dead,” Benjamin rasped, trying to catch his breath.
The woman didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she raised an eyebrow and rolled her eyes toward the mangled car behind them.
Benjamin followed her gaze and his stomach dropped. There, slumped lifelessly in the driver’s seat, was a man in a fancy suit. His neck was twisted at an unnatural angle, his body motionless.
He stared at the scene in shock, “But... that’s—”
“Yeah,” the woman said, cutting him off, her voice oddly calm. “That’s you.”
“where are my manners let me introduce myslef, I’m Lorelei, the goddess of death. I’m here to take you to the afterlife,” the woman said, her voice calm but commanding.
