Jake sighed as he walked through the halls. He tentatively rubbed at the bruise on his arm.
"Man.. that hurts." He could still feel the pain of where Rowley had shoved him. It probably hadn't been intentional, but he hit his arm hard against the edge of the locker. He let out another sigh as he neared his friends. A weight was roughly placed on his shoulder as one of his friends threw his arm around Jake's neck.
"What are you so glum about?" His friend smirked, leaning more of his weight onto Jake.
"Nothing, just got into a fight yesterday." Jake shrugged, reaching up to rub at his injury. The boys continued to move forward, their bodies awkwardly colliding as they walked.
"Whoahh, what was it for this time?" The other guy's lips quirked into an amused smile. Jake pretended to puff out his chest.
"Yeah, just saved this girl from being hit, nothing much," Jake spoke in a nonchalant voice.
"Wow look at you, saving all the girls," He pushed against Jake's body, arm still slung around his neck, "You must be pretty popular with them huh?"
"Hah! You wouldn't be able to imagine." Jake grinned, elbowing his friend as he teased. The two continued to walk in this awkward closeness, the other not making any move to let go of Jake. Jake swallowed as his classroom neared, and his feet slurred to a stop. The boy in turn stopped as well.
"Isn't your class up ahead?" At Jake's question, the boy squinted further down the hallway, leaning slightly off of Jake's shoulder.
"Huh yeah, I think so."
"You should probably go then, right?" Jake nudged his friend, but he still made no movement to get off of him. After a beat of stillness, Jake shrugged his friend's arm off of him.
"Uh, see you after class, yeah?" Even to himself, Jake knew his voice sounded strange.
"Oh yeah, sure." His friend shoved his hands in his pockets and nodded good bye, continuing forward to his class. Jake watched him go, the lingering heat of his arm around his neck. Jake shook himself roughly before ducking into class. The rest of the class was already seated, making him the last to arrive. He slid into his seat and smiled at the girl at his desk. Yana gave him a half smile in return. Within moments, the teacher entered class, and Jake let his head slump onto the table. With the rest of the students paying attention, Jake lay with his head on his hands, his back raising and falling with breath. Though his eyes were open, his mind was practically unconscious. As he let out a breath, he felt the warm weight of his friend's arm on his shoulder. His eyes half closed, he gazed unseeingly in front of him. Words whispered against his ears, though he could not make them out. He didn't want to. All he could hear were his friends teasing words as they leaned against him. Their weight against his own was the only thing he felt. Jake's eyes drowsily closed before fluttering back open. A sharp bang pounded against the desk and Jake's head shot up in an instant. All the warmth in his body immediately froze. The sounds around him suddenly erupted in his ears, and he heard as the class giggled at his frightened response. The teacher in front of him frowned and removed her hand off of the desk.
"If you sleep again in my class, I'll have you at the front."
"Y-yes Ms." Jake stuttered back, ignoring the bought of laughter his stunned response had brought to the class. She narrowed her eyes at him once more before turning back to the front of the classroom, her earlier frustration melting away. Jake dropped his head on his hand, his eyebrows furrowing as he frowned at the teacher.—
