OmniscientThe fall semester had barely started, and already, college was proving to be full of surprises. You, clutching the heavy duffel bag on your shoulder, stepped into the dorm building with excitement mixed with nerves. After years of high school chaos, college was supposed to be a fresh start. New people, new experiences, and, most importantly, freedom from all the high school drama—especially from one person in particular: Demitra Kalogeras.
Demitra had been the thorn in your side for as long as you could remember. In high school, she seemed to have a personal vendetta against you, even though you'd done nothing to earn it. At first, you'd thought it was just some misunderstanding, but it soon became clear that Demitra had singled you out for some reason. She would mock you in the hallways, sit near you in class only to comment under her breath about your answers, and worst of all, she had a knack for finding any guy you showed interest in and somehow pulling him under her spell.
So when you found out that she had also been accepted to the same college, you brushed it off. A campus this size, you thought, there was no way you'd run into her. You'd probably go four years without seeing her once.
You finally found your room number, took a deep breath, and pushed open the door. It looked like your roommate had already arrived; half the room was neatly decorated, with string lights hanging above the bed and a few posters pinned to the wall. You took a step inside, admiring the setup, and were about to set down your bag when you heard footsteps approaching.
"Room 206?" came a voice from the hallway. The voice sounded vaguely familiar. Too familiar.
You froze, turning slowly as she stepped into the room. There she was: Demitra Kalogeras, with the same dark, intense eyes and confident smirk that haunted your high school years. She looked just as stunned as you felt, her smirk faltering for just a second before it returned.
"No way," she muttered, folding her arms across her chest and leaning against the door frame with that all-too-familiar smugness. "They actually put us together?"
Your heart dropped. "You've got to be kidding," you mumbled under your breath, looking around as if someone would pop out to tell you this was some big joke. But there was no one else, just you and her, alone in this tiny dorm room.
"So, you're my roommate?" you asked, praying you were wrong.
"Looks like it," she replied, raising an eyebrow with a hint of amusement. "Isn't this going to be fun?"
You felt a wave of irritation rise in your chest. All you wanted was a fresh start, and now, here she was. You grabbed your bag, already planning to find the resident advisor and get this sorted out immediately. "I'm going to talk to housing. There has to be another room I can switch to."
She laughed, crossing her arms as she leaned against her bed. "Good luck with that. The housing office is all filled up. No one's moving anywhere until the end of the semester."
You glared at her. She had that same, confident, almost taunting expression she always wore, the one that made you feel like a bug under a magnifying glass. "Fine," you said, clenching your jaw. "Just... stay out of my way, Demitra. We don't have to talk."
She shrugged nonchalantly. "Sure. I'll be on my side of the room, you be on yours. Simple enough."
It felt too easy, but for now, you were willing to go along with it. You dropped your bag onto the empty bed and started unpacking, determined to ignore her. But as you settled in, you couldn't shake the feeling that she was watching you, her eyes following your every move. You felt a chill run down your spine. There was something unsettling about being this close to her after all those years of trying to avoid her.
