Lian stirred, his senses reawakening in a haze of light and warmth. The ceiling above him was made of interwoven bamboo, a comforting scent of herbs and fresh earth filling the air. Slowly, memories trickled back—Xiu's voice, Zeng's presence, and that last, desperate surge of power. "You're... alive. Both of you. He's still here, too." she had said. The thought jolted him fully awake, and he sat up quickly, his heart racing.
Throwing the blanket aside, he hurried toward the doorway, his feet moving instinctively. He was met by a breathtaking view outside: fields upon fields of blue flowers stretching to the horizon, the color vibrant and surreal under the early morning light. Their soft glow bathed everything in a calm serenity, but Lian could barely register the sight. A familiar sound—laughter—echoed from somewhere nearby, and he immediately followed, his heart pounding with a mixture of hope and disbelief.
Pushing past clusters of flowers, he finally came upon the source of the laughter: Xiu stood in the middle of the field, hands animatedly gesturing as she told a story, her laughter echoing through the open air. Beside her stood a figure in white robes, his back turned to Lian, the sunlight glinting off his shoulders.
Lian's breath caught as he recognized that figure. It was Zeng, smiling warmly as he listened to Xiu, his eyes shining with the same life and light Lian remembered. There was not a single scar or wound left upon him; he looked as though he'd never endured the horrors of the Black Veil at all.
Xiu spotted Lian first, her smile growing. "Look who's finally awake!"
At her words, Zeng turned, and when his gaze met Lian's, a flood of emotions washed over Lian—relief, disbelief, joy, and an overwhelming gratitude he could barely contain. Without a second thought, he sprinted across the field toward Zeng, not stopping until he was right in front of him, his heart hammering.
"Zeng... you're alive," Lian breathed, his voice breaking as he reached out, grabbing Zeng in a tight embrace. A sob escaped him, and he didn't try to hold back. "You're... actually here. Alive."
Zeng's arms wrapped around him, the embrace steady and reassuring. "I told you I wouldn't leave you," he murmured, his voice soft but full of conviction. "I promised, didn't I?"
Lian laughed through his tears, holding him even closer, unwilling to let go. Xiu stood beside them, her own smile gentle and warm, watching the two with a look of satisfaction and quiet pride.
As the sun rose higher, casting golden light over the flower fields, the three stood together, bound by trials and a journey that had led them here, to a new beginning that was finally theirs.
